One-Owner Feel: 1999 Honda Civic CX Hatchback

With just 113,000 original miles and two careful owners, this 1999 Honda Civic CX Hatchback is a clean, unmolested survivor from a time when Hondas were built to last and simple daily driving was the goal. The seller notes this one has lived its life in the Pacific Northwest and is currently listed for sale here on eBay from Southeast Portland, Oregon. Offered with a clean title and no reserve, it’s a great example of an increasingly rare economy hatch.

This generation of Civic (the sixth, known as the EK chassis) remains one of Honda’s most bulletproof and utilitarian offerings. The CX trim is one of the most stripped-down, lightest models available at the time, making it a favorite platform for enthusiasts and tuners—but this one appears to have been left alone. It still wears its original 1.6L SOHC inline-four engine, paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission that is said to shift smoothly. The seller states it runs and drives well, and has always been maintained.

The car is equipped with power steering, power front disc brakes, and a working heater and A/C system. The tires reportedly have around 80% tread left, and the lights, horn, wipers, and all gauges are fully functional. Unlike many cars of this age, the Civic is said to be rattle-free, with tight-fitting doors and a clean, rust-free underbody. These small details reflect its careful ownership history and hint at a car that’s been appreciated and preserved more than used and abused.

The exterior is finished in classic Milano Red, and although it’s not stated if the paint is original, the car shows well in photos. Inside, the gray interior looks basic but honest—no racing seats or aftermarket steering wheels here, just stock Civic simplicity. The hatch area looks clean and uncluttered, and the overall impression is of a car that’s been used as a commuter, not a canvas.

Hatchback Civics from this era are becoming increasingly difficult to find in unmolested condition. Whether you’re looking for a dependable daily, a throwback to your youth, or a clean base for a B-series or K-swap, this Civic CX could be a smart buy.

Would you preserve it as-is or build it into a street sleeper?

Ideal car for the budget minded that have a long drive in heavy traffic, big city commuter. The autoloader is a blessing in bumper to bumper for an hour. 🙏 🤲

As much as I like a Honda shift linkage, I agree that in heavy city traffic, an auto is a blessing. Otherwise, the 90s base Civics are a blast to drive on a twisty country road, almost Miata like. Not a power house, but so well balanced and smooth. Honda was amazing in those years. Cheap, practical, dependable, and a boatload of joy to drive.

Ralph my Buddy had a 2000 or so Accord. Base model 5sp. What a truly great, comfortable, and roomy car, and a blast to drive. You’re right about well balanced especially for fwd. Also heavy city driving is the only reason you’d want an automatic especially in a Honda. Great feeling shifters. 👍 🏁

Back in the 80’s working at the Honda dealer. I kind of wanted several models. A CRX SI a Prelude 4WS. And an Accord with a stick and a sunroof. ( don’t ask me why about the sunroof( they were beautifully shifting cars back then. )

Hondas had weak automatic transmissions in this era, and perhaps the best manual transmissions in the industry. But still a nice ride.

It’s a beauty. There are not many of these left up here in Quebec. But 25 years ago the streets were full of these and it’s variants. Maybe because i’m older now i hope it’s next owner won’t go the fast and furious way and keep it presentable

    2nd: 5th gen, upto ’97
not officially the hatch but this has lift back. A solo driver I’d strip all but the driver’s seat for utility (no frnt pass’s = more stow length).
4 speed’s fine (I assume OD in top gear) 105 inch WB just like my fox-platform waggy. 16 yrs newer, 4 cyl, efi, etc~
