Only 32k Miles? 1968 Chevelle Malibu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

General Motors treated their mid-size cars to a redesign in 1968, including the Chevy Chevelle, then in its fifth year. This second-generation Malibu looks to be either a minimally used car at just 32,600 miles, or it’s been partially restored. The paint and tires are new, and the engine looks clean enough to eat off. Located in Queens, New York, this ’68 Chevelle is available here on craigslist for $21,000. This tip comes to us via Barn Finder Gunter Kramer!

The Chevelle debuted in 1964 as domestic automakers were slotting intermediate-sized cars in between their compacts and full-size models. Ford did it with the Fairlane in 1962, so you could assume that the Chevelle was a direct countermeasure. The restyled ‘68s were winners in the sales department, with production at 464,699 units, although that number includes the El Camino car/truck. The most popular model was the Malibu Sport Coupe at 200,962 units, of which 90% came equipped with a V8 engine, as was the case with the seller’s car.

Although the seller provides loads of documentation on the upkeep of this Chevelle, we don’t know much about its history. For example, how many owners? Is the mileage actual? What kind of shape was the car in before it was recently repainted? Was the vinyl top replaced, too? That sort of stuff. A few photos are provided of the car from up on a lift and the undercarriage looks crusty in places.

We’re told the 307 cubic inch V8 is original, and the same is probably true of the automatic transmission, probably the venerable 2-speed Powerglide. The seller says the car runs great and it looks like it would be nice for weekend rides and car shows. Depending on which price guide you check, the seller’s asking price is either just a tad on the high side or below what a stellar example might bring. Most of the attention seems to migrate to the SS models.

Lotsa surface rust there. Not always crucial, but a deeper look would seem smart

Nice from the outside but not so sure of the inside or underneath. No pics of the interior, with the exception of the rear seat, and partial dash.

My real concern is the Massachusetts inspection sticker on the passenger side windshield.
Can not really tell the year but could be between April 2011 and 2021, therefore, my concern as Mass uses salt brine or calcium chloride infused salt to clear the winter roads. Where in Mass did she come from? Obviously registered in NY but don’t see a NY inspection sticker which would be on the driver’s side windshield.

Therefore, I agree with Mark, a deeper look would be wise.

I’m curious as to what the new whitewall tires cost them.
When my SUV needed new tires I wanted to put whitewalls on it. You know, something different and maybe bring whitewalls back in fashion. After looking everywhere, there was only one company that produces whitewalls in 16″, 17″ & 18″ tires. AND it doubled the price. If I paid $800 for a set of blackwalls it would have cost me $1600 for whitewalls.
Needless to say, I’m still driving around in Blackwall tires.

It’s gonna be a cloned SS real quick, because it’s a 307 power glide, if the floors are good, and the frame is solid, it needs suspension motor, transmission and rear, it’s not gonna be cheap

That’s crusty? I live in Massachusetts, the brine is terrible stuff but it saves lives. Crusty is whacking the rear bumper of your 2008 F150 with a 3lb sledge and finding a complete outline of the frame on the ground in rust.

I always get suspicious when I come across a car like this. The new paint the new tires what is the seller trying to keep me from noticing? More than likely it could be serious rust issues underneath and those unseen areas could be hiding some vey expensive repairs. Definitely would give this a very good going over and take my magnet with me.

My father bought a 68 malibu brand new in oct 1967 when came home from Vietnam for $2,935.00. It was on the showroom. It was exactly like this except red and no vinyl roof.

I have 15 inch Vogues on my 73 Grand Prix, and they are under 300.00 per tire, w mounting and balance, Diamond back 1.5 inch whitewalls, same price, those little skinny whitewalls should be at the most 100.00 each, you got robbed

I didn’t buy the whitewalls so I didn’t get took. LOL
John, your vouges are probably 15″, am I right? I was looking for 17″ ww and I think that’s why they were so expensive.
I’ve still got blackwall tires on my SUV, for now
