Only $700! 1966 MGB Barn Find

Wearing a patchwork coating of red over its original blue, this 1966 MGB has obviously been in the barn for a while (that front plate dates from 1995!) That being said, it looks relatively solid and complete. It’s for sale here on craigslist in Elkland, Missouri for $700.

As far as craigslist photos go, this set isn’t that bad, although it would be nice to see some under car pictures and shots of the sills where MGB’s love to rust. It looks like there’s some filler in that trunk lid and the bumpers are someone bent, but what do you expect for $700? I remember from the early B I had at one point that the top separates from the frame on these cars, versus the elaborate fold down top on later tourers.

The worst place for B’s to rust in just in front of the rear wheels, and it looks like there has been some repairs done to this one in that spot. However, patch panels do exist for this area and they aren’t that hard to install. The trouble is that the car is three layers thick in this area (outer sill, “inner membrane”, inner sill) and generally if there is rust in the outer panel, the center section is worse.

Many folks like the earlier “metal dash” over the later padded ones, and hopefully the nice aftermarket steering wheel could be refinished. Seat upholstery kits are easy to find, or a local upholsterer could duplicate the original pattern without much trouble. It would be nice to know if the car had overdrive or not; I can’t tell from the pictures and there’s literally almost no text in the ad.

This is all we have in the way of an engine shot, but at least the carburetors are still there and attached. Since a pair of SU’s like this and the accompanying intake and exhaust manifolds will usually bring at least $200 to enthusiasts with later, single Stromberg cars wanting to convert them, and the wire wheels, hubs and rear axle would probably bring another $100 or so, you aren’t taking a huge risk by buying this car. Me, I’d get it running and see what I had! What would you do?

I think that’ll sell quickly. For $700 it doesn’t look too bad. Probably worth that just for the front bumper and the grill!

I bought one like this in the mid 70’s for $50 just for the stock steering wheel. Next day sold the rest for $100. I’ve had 10 or more B’s

It must have went fast. As soon as I saw it here, I went to craigslist both Springfield, Mo and Lake of the Ozarks, it was not listed.

I stand corrected, it is listed as a “fresh barn find”

An MGB of this vintage may have the o/d on the wiper stalk on the right side of the steering wheel.

I had a ’67, mostly rusted, that came with a battery relocated to the trunk and a handwritten cardboard sign that said, “A JUMP?” I fixed the floors with plywood and an old galvanized stock tank, replaced the clutch, then parked it. Got a ’69 to replace it and it eventually rusted a bit as well. These are the cars I still dream about, by which all other cars have been judged, including my beloved Corvette. I’d buy it in a heartbeat if the love of my life would approve.

That is only 2 hours away from me. I am going to go check it out this weekend if it has not sold.

This car did sell after only two days on Craigslist. I spoke with the own, who had no idea how to delete the listing.
