I’m currently on a trip in the Midwest, and as usual one of the first things I do is check out the local craigslist listings for finds. Considering how expensive Volkswagen buses have been going for lately, this seems like a bargain to me at $850. Yes, I know it’s not an older one, and has fewer (but larger) windows than the most wanted versions, but the price is only three digits! It’s listed here on craigslist and is located in Eagleville, Missouri.
Yes, there’s a catch or two. For one thing, there’s some rust. Not the worst of these I’ve ever seen, but if you want something really nice, some work will be in order. Also, there’s the little matter of a title–there isn’t one. The bus will be sold on a bill of sale.
Looking closely, honestly, the rust isn’t that bad, at least on this side. Remember, $850! However, it’s been sitting for fifteen years or so after an estate sale. The seller also reminds us that the glass is nice.
The interior doesn’t look bad at all! The seller tells us the floors are solid as well. All in all, this seems like a lot of vehicle for $850.
There’s even an engine in the back! We have no idea if it’s any good or not, but hey, it’s a Volkswagen flat four–how bad can it be? Would you take a chance on this bus?
Anybody seen my Grateful 8 track?
The bus guys call these “Fat Chicks” and the values reflect that. No one wants to be seen with the “fat chick”.
Yes, but they are fun if oiled up
How many here have done that?
I know “fat chicks” is used as a slang for Super Beetles but buses too?
Same engine as Porsche 914. Doesn’t look too bad rust wise. It’s a very good deal.
Seems these newer buses haven’t got the attention of the original ones, but they will. Looks like a good deal for a VW bus nut.
I see the prices going up on these now. I’d buy it at that price. Not tough to get and keep running. Some states have easy title laws. A VIN search to check for legal status, and sometimes a bond.
The Craigslist ad says $1850. That extra grand makes this a stupid project!.
Love the fit and finish (when they’re good) and the shape – but you’d go no further than the shops in one – prices ? Ha – keeps the heat away from the things I buy
Even at $8.50 no title means no sale.
We just got a Mechanics Lien Title on a ’68 Karmann Ghia for $150.00 in Oregon.
It has been bumped up to 1850 now.
I saw the movie “Sleeper”. That bus will fire right up.
Same case as a 914, maybe. Not necessarily the same cam and heads.
It popped up on me listed for $1850…….
Sorry, no deal.
This guy is too lazy to even put in enough air for the tires !
And that’s why you can’t get good deals on craigslist anymore, it either sells in five minutes, or the seller doubles the price.
