Original Owner Sale: ’87 Chevy Monte Carlo Aerocoupe

One owner and selling at no reserve: this rare-in-white 1987 Chevy Monte Carlo Aerocoupe looks far nicer than the one we recently featured and is selling cheaply at the moment. It’s not likely to stay at its current bid of $2,650 for long, however, as it looks like an honest example that is said to run well but have some bodywork needs . Find it here on eBay in Libertyville, Illinois, with 168,000 miles on the clock.

I don’t tend to get too worked up over GM option codes, but the seller of this car says this Aerocoupe is particularly rare being outfitted with the glass T-Top roof and a power driver’s seat. It seemed to me that the T-Tops were not all that unique, but I suppose when paired with a power driver’s seat, it becomes a bit more exclusive. The seller notes one fender was replaced as a result of a minor accident, and you can see there’s rust at the bottom of the driver’s door.

Other rust is noted in the lower sections of the fender / wheel well areas. The interior is in decent shape, aside from that garish steering wheel cover. The seller notes this Aerocoupe comes from a child-free, smoke-free household so there’s not unusual stains or smells in the cabin. It does have some wear, which is to expected for the mileage. The transmission is said to shift smoothly; however, some features like the power door locks, are non-operational.

The Aerocoupe’s V8 has received some significant attention in recent months in the form of a new pushrod and fuel pump; the seller claims it runs very well with no odd sounds or smoke. The entire engine and transmission were rebuilt at 90K miles, so the owner hasn’t been reluctant to spend money on maintenance over the years. Fix the rust while you drive it everyday, and hopefully snag it for $5K or less – how does that sound for a plan?

A power seat & t-tops are not all that rare, but what is rare about this is that it has a bench seat, a split bench. I was working at a Chevy dealer when these were being made & I’ve seen a few optioned this way, but most came through with buckets with the console shifter. What I have never seen though is buckets with a column shifter. The weirdest one I’ve seen was a white notchback with blue vinyl bench interior and a half blue vinyl roof.

The 83 or 1st year had a full bench seat. Nice car.

If every Monte Carlo in this generation were built as this Aerocoupe would they be still considered a desirable car?

I really don’t care much for the cars of the 80s as far as collectability is concerned. But where else can a younger enthusiast relive his/her 80s youth of cruising with their family members with such a nice example as this survivor? You won’t see yourself coming and going with this one.

Jeff, I don’t get how you can drive the car with the rust but hate the steering wheel cover. That thing is truly representative of these G-bodies and the 80’s. I love these cars especially the Monte Carlo in it’s regular form. They remind me so much of when I was growing up and always bring up fond memories.
As far as aerocoupes go, they’re not my cup of tea, but they aren’t common cars. I’ve seen one in my life so far. And they’re not ugly either, just not exactly beautiful to my eyes.

I would rather have just have the GTO. It is more aerodynamic then the slab sided Monte plus was made to handle the LS2. Value wise the GTO trumps in collector value and appeal. What a waste of a build. Wrecked GTO or not. Fix the GTO!

Normally I would agree, but if you saw the GTO in the episode you would probably agree the GTO was beyond saving.
The accident it was in ripped it open substantially.

The last generation of GTO is still far from being a future collectible. It was largely unloved when new, and had lackluster sales performance. The styling was from the the bland, jellybean school of design. It’s only good attribute was the Chevy LS1 (2004), then LS2 (2005-06) small-block V8s.

“…..looks far nicer than the one we recently featured.”

    Now that’s an understatement.

It is NOT rare at all. I know of at least 7 cars and all are white. That is just in my local area.

These were made in an era of the muscle car boom. Those of you that may or may not remember in the early 1980’s one day a Superbird was $4500. The next $30,000. That being said the trend in Detroit was a shift away from rear wheel drive. Car buyers still embraced RWD. So for the performance enthusiasts there was the Monte Carlo SS with the massive thundering 305. A great car for Mom but for the son borrowing it on the weekends getting picked on and embarassed by the Fox Mustang’s not so.

But all too often owners who bought them thought that there was magic in those SS tape stripe/letters stuck on the doors that most put them away to preserve for retirement thinking lightning will strike twice and if kept nice would double and triple in value like a Limited edition collector plate. Many are still waiting on that day.

One could look on Hemmings or any collector car site. There are many others how much do you want to pay for another low mileage example?

The Aero Coupe is a gimmick. It was a way for GM make so many to use in Nascar. Also a way to breathe new life in a model that was already on the way to being discontinued.

Think of the 1976 Full size GM convertibles. Hey public we are not making anymore…….but will make and sell until supply runs out for you collectors. No thanks.

The price so far is a little over $5k with 69 bids! Looks like a few people are working hard not to pay one $ more than they have to.

I had a friend once upon a time that bought an aerocoupe from a chevy guy that had a 70 SS 454 as his real keeper. When he got it home and started taking it apart you could stand on the ground in the rear seat area. The outside didn’t look that rusted, but upstate NY does that. It became a parts car. I suggested that he take the rear window and trunk lid he had purchased and put it on an 87 GN body he had. He would have caused a lot of purists crazy trying to figure out what it was. It never happened, but I still think it would of been cool.

In the day we had one of these. I don’t care if you like them or not. We bought ours new. I had a hyper chip installed, and Walker mufflers also installed. Car was a joy to drive, and own. Was great for long road trips. Just enough power too. Where the hell do you think you are? The autobahn? The ones that thought it ugly? Might have been looking in a mirror at the time.

The 2 rare parts of this Aerocoupe is the front bench seat and the t-tops. Only 200 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupes were built for 1986, but that number jumped to 6,052 copies in 1987. Produced by GM with help from the now defunct Cars&Concepts. The rare thing is that 300 Aerocoupes of every color, black, white, maroon and silver had t-tops. If you find a **75 annual super saver** MC/SS Aerocoupe (Aerofastback-on the window sticker) these will hold the most value. They were fully loaded cars with t-tops and G80 posi rear, power window, locks, AC, tilt wheel, cruise control and a DX4 radio which has AM/FM Stereo Cassette and a 4 band graphic equalizer in it. Remember in the mid 80’s when GM said,”if you had t-tops you couldnt get posi rear”. Well that was not the case with Aerocoupes back when that was their stance. I have owned 2 Aerocoupes and 8 notchback MC/SS’s. Many bought were bought new or I was the second owner and had all the history on them. I still have 1 white 87 MC/SS nothback with 15k miles and 1 black MC/SS aerocoupe t-tops with 72k on it.
