We recently featured a super clean 1987 BMW 325is, a sport package survivor in highly original condition. That car sold for a strong number, but it appears to have been relisted. The seller of the red car will now have competition with a 1988 sport package car, that presents in similar preserved condition with original paint. The 1988 models lost the iconic front air dam but retained all the other sport package goodies that make these E30s desirable today. Find the car here on eBay with bidding over $6K and no reserve.
It’s near impossible to find an E30 that hasn’t been modified, which was a big selling point for the red 1987 model. Based on the description, I don’t believe this seller had any interest in modifying the 325is, but it does appear to have been lowered at some point based on its ride height. It retains most of its original bits, however, from the rear lip spoiler to the 14″ basketweave wheels (incorrectly called 15s in the listing). The black plastic bumper trim, typically faded, looks good here.
The leather sport seats are quite presentable, and would likely clean up almost as-new with a quick re-dye. The bolsters on these grow fragile with age, so it’s refreshing to see a set of seats in a clearly used car that aren’t destroyed. It’s hard to tell for sure, but the dash doesn’t appear to be cracked which is truly shocking considering the attrition rate for E30 dashboards. The interior is otherwise stock, except for the aftermarket head unit, and the wonderful three-spoke MTech steering wheel remains in place.
The stock M20 inline-six cylinder is a robust engine with plenty of OEM parts still available at your local dealer. While not overly sexy, the motor provides plenty of torque and is still quite comfortable in modern day traffic. The seller notes a new timing belt was installed in 2014, and the cooling system overhauled at the same time. M20s are interference engines, so forgoing a timing belt change is asking for trouble. This E30 seems like a safe bet to bid on if the car history shakes out.
This was one of the all time best cars BMW ever made. Was an amazing city car in that you had tremendous visibility from the drivers seat in all directions and you had a very small turning circle. Get familiar with it and you can go almost anywhere. The weak points are the door locks which seem to fail about ever 50K and were designed to do so. The rest of it is almost bullet proof. I would still have mine except for a dentist with a Chevy Suburban who was paying more attention to her children misbehaving in the back seat then her driving. I was hit at about 35MPH the speed limit as I was waiting for a light and pushed into traffic and hit from both directions by two different cars going opposite directions. Exciting to say the least but I was not badly hurt however the car was totaled. Really loved that one.
