Over 20 Factory Options: 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Sport Sedan

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

In Michigan where I live, and I suspect in many other places around the country, the 1968-72 Chevelle is in the running for the title of “America’s Collector Car.” That simply means that enough people aspire to own one that it could be mentioned in the same breath as the 1965 Mustang or 1969 Camaro, among others. When we talk Chevelles, however, we are almost always talking about the Malibu and SS two-door hardtops, not this relatively uncommon Sport Sedan, one of 24,192 built in 1972. That sounds like a lot until you realize that total Chevelle production that model year was 450,842 (a number that included the El Camino). The car is on craigslist in Powell, Ohio, and the seller says that it has “over 20 factory options,” including air conditioning, which makes it a great summer cruiser for the whole crew. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Tony Primo for sending it our way; the price tag is $9,200.

One of those options is the 165-horsepower L65 350 two-barrel V8 (a $27.40 option), and another is the Turbo 350 automatic transmission. The car has had a fairly extensive recent service, including “battery, tires, shocks, brakes, hoses and belts, cap rotor and plugs, and all fluids.” Other underhood options include power steering, power brakes, and the aforementioned air conditioning (no comment from the seller on whether or not it works). The Chevelle was aligned recently as well, and that brings up one of the most interesting options, the F41 suspension package, which included front and rear sway bars and “heavier duty springs and shocks,” according to the seller. With 110,000 miles on the clock, there are most likely quite a few driving seasons left on the driveline.

Other options include the following:

  • Tilt steering column
  • Sport steering wheel
  • Tinted glass
  • AM/FM stereo with four speakers (the owner has upgraded to a new stereo)
  • White painted roof
  • Bodyside moldings
  • Rally wheels
  • Whitewall tires
  • Trunk light
  • Clock
  • Rear window defogger
  • Passenger side mirror

The front seat needs new upholstery, but aside from that and a small rust spot on the right front fender, this seems like a solid original car.

The Chevelle was sold new in Coffeyville, Kansas, and the seller will include the car’s original Protect-O-Plate, owner’s manual, keys, and documents going back to the car’s original owner. I’m on the fence whether the paint color is Ascot Blue or Mulsanne Blue (I’m leaning toward Mulsanne, maybe because I’m more a fan of sports car racing than horse racing), but either way, it appears to be original or at least very old. There are a lot of Chevelle fans out there, but not a lot of Chevelle four doors. It may not be the 1970 SS LS-6 of your dreams, but it’s a lot cheaper and a bit more practical. And I’ll bet it handles great.

Cool sport sedan Toth. Bet this cruises along very cheerfully, and corners flatter than expected. Rally wheels sure are nice. 👍

Love the 4 door hardtops from Chevy, Pontiac, Buick, and Olds from these years. This one is very nice. Definitely be a blast to druve around in and enjoy. And like I’ve always said, the view out over the hood of a 4 door is exactly the same as the view out over the hood of a 2 door. Very nice one here Aaron and a big thank you to eagle eyed Tony Primo for submitting it. You have a good eye Tony!!! And thank you for writing this one up too Aaron. I enjoyed it.

That’s a super nice car, I’d much rather have a four-door sedan than a two-door in this one. Everyone has or wants a two-door Chevelle; that’s no fun. A heck of a good price, too, especially in 2025 dollars. Great one, Aaron and Tony P!

I agree with you Scotty. Everyone is cruising around in a two door coupe. This four door can stand out from the crowd.

I’m a sucker for painted roofs. With Mulsanne (I’m with Aaron, pretty sure it’s Mulsanne) blue over antique white, and the blue interior, it’s a nice looking combo. Add how the car was optioned, pretty cool to have F41, and the price ($8900 in the ad), if it were anywhere near me, I’d be tempted. It’d be a fun car to just cruise around in, hit the grocery store, etc. Two door Chevelles are ubiquitous around here but I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a four door.

This car looks like a good deal, of course, considering where it’s from it needs a thorough in person inspection. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for a buyer step up, it’s going into a weekend if there are any it should sell.

This is a pretty nice Chevelle. I have had my 1971 2 door since high school 1989 and this would be a nice cruiser with the drive by windows and A/C. Maybe add dual exhaust. Looks like the engine was cleaned up and painted the proper way. The price seems ok too. If I was looking for a another weekend cruiser this it.

I have to add here, I don’t remember ever seeing a 4 door optioned up so nicely. I also like the photo of the original owner. She may have been 74 at the time of purchase, but she sure new what she wanted in a new car. This is such a keeper. I wouldn’t touch a thing just wax it and preserve it and drive it and enjoy it as best I can.

I looked at the Craigslist ad and see a 1969 Camaro in the garage. Where do you see a picture of the original owner?

There is a small picture of an elderly woman in lower left of the next to last picture which shows the documentation. It’s easy to miss.

I’d be happy with something like this. It reminds me of the gold and white ’70 4-door hardtop that I almost bought in Lake Alfred 5 years ago. I didn’t buy it because
I couldn’t reach out to the owner of the car lot that had it. Yeah, it
was nice on the outside and the
interior looked great for a 50 year
old car. But I had too many damned questions about the health of the engine and drive line
to make an informed decision as
to whether I should buy the car or
not. If 2-doors are tough, than
    4-doors are fabulous!

That is a cool Chevelle. F41 option is amazing. $8900 is a great price.
You’ll get much more attention at a show than the ubiquitous clones

Not proud to say this, but I ruined one exactly like this back in 1984. I just got married and my wife’s grandma gave me one identical to this with nothing wrong with it other than she wanted something easier on gas. I cut it all up, gutted the interior, cut the front frame up at suspension points to build a street stock dirt racecar. We used the front sheet metal off of this car and a body off a 2 door. Didn’t even think to try and sell the flawless interior. We just trashed it all in dumpsters where my buddy worked. I’d really enjoy it today even as a 4 door

Many, many now-cool cars have been sacrificed to the Dirt Oval. I try not to think about it.

What a really nice car, I love the 4dr hardtop cars this one doesn’t seem like it needs much and at $8900 these days that’s a steal! If the buyer is lucky a good buff may bring back some shine to the paint. I’d surely rock this one!

No Chevelle should be considered rare. They made thousands and thousands and thousands of them. Even the beloved SS was made in the thousands.

Sorry. Grandma got a 4 door for a reason. If you want a Chevelle, a 4 door is not for crusing nor going to have people wanting to anti up for resale value. Value will stay static!

Like so many others, it’s refreshing to see a 4-door hardtop. I’ve always liked the 68-72 4-door hardtops.
This one is nicely optioned, great color combo, and under 10gs. Won’t last long.

Unique Chevelle. Looks good with the Rallye’s too. I would take it over an SS clone any day. $8900 is very fair, provided nothing major needs attention.

It’s about damm time four door hardtops are seeing some glory. Granny didn’t drive a 2 door. I miss 4 door hardtops.

Who purchased 4 door cars…Granny did of course. It sure was not the gearheads from the glory days of the muscle car era, nor are they highly sought after in the market place today.(except as donations to a project)..you do not see them in parades, muscle care meetings, movies…etc…once again Granny had a purpose for the 4 doors…and it sure was not to attend or cruise muscle car events….sorry..

    My New Classic Ride

I’m the new owner of this sweet survivor. The seller was a genuine enthusiast who cared for it well, included much of its history, and even trailered it to Indiana for me. It’s the perfect “ice-cream getter” and “Sunday-going-to-church” driver.

My plan is to keep it period-correct and stock—just polish, wax, and take care of the little refreshes and repairs it needs to stay clean and road-ready.

I’ve been scrolling Barnfinds for a couple of years, waiting for the right one to come along. Finally pulled the trigger, and I couldn’t be happier. A sweet ride indeed!

Congrats, Jeff! Like your plan to keep it as stock as possible. After all, how many SS 396 sport sedans have we seen? LOL!
I even frown on removing a/c for performance purposes.
