Pace Yourself: 1976 AMC

'76 Pacer

This AMC Pacer is one of the 117,244 built in 1976. We don’t know how many purple ones are left, but if you would like to own one, this one is listed on craigslist in Maine and priced at $4,500.  We have featured Pacers before, but never in this purple.

The owner says that it runs and just recently burned a little rubber!  We don’t know where the air filter cover is and there is no mention of it in the ad.

The history of ownership and/or mileage is not given. Given that this is a Pacer, the history probably won’t be a make or break deal, but it would definitely be nice to know!

The contrasting colors do get your attention! The interior looks clean and neat throughout. The owner says that the brakes need some attention, other then that, this Pacer is ready to go! If you are serious, be sure to give the seller a call and set up a test drive, just let us know how it goes. It won’t be hard to find this plum in the parking lot, that’s for sure!

Motor-on,

Robert

an odd thing about pacers, the one door is longer than the other (look at the joint line)… very intentional hard to see in these pix, but passenger door IS longer (less b pillar if you look closely… so people can get into the rear fishbowl

      gord,

It has been reported that the designers did this to encourage the rear passengers to exit the car on the (USA) curb side as a safety feature.

Whenever I hear Pacer I think Rack & Pinion issues. Hopefully after 40 years they have been corrected.

it does look good in the photos but not enought information in the listing. it does need a PI looking for rust. if it is all there it might make a nice daily driver. interesting find.

“the perfect purple car to make a statement in”– I can think of a few statements, I’m curious which one the seller is thinking of…

Must have sold…or the seller decided to keep it!

I have no idea of its actual value — and am not sufficiently interested to check — but it should be a nice, attention-getting ride. I’d even dig having the purple paint.

Though Pacers seem to be relatively rare and thus somewhat worthy of saving, I have to admit I never see one without thinking “hmmmm, small-block Chevy….”

My sister had a Rambler American and I really liked the ride.. She beat the crap out of it as her first car, but it was a good driver.. AMC ran into financial difficulties and began using GM engines.. That was their downfall.. Front end mechanics were cheap and wore out early.. Other than that, the company made nice little cars including the fish bowl..
