Painted and Forgotten: 1984 BMW M635CSi

Not only is this a desirable example of BMW’s second M car, the M6, but it is an early, European-market specification known officially as the M635CSI. It wears an excellent OEM color known as Bahama Beige and was parked for close to two decades following a light tear-down for a repaint. The M635CSI retains its Euro-spec equipment, along with the more powerful M88 engine. Find it here on eBay with bidding approaching $18K and the reserve unmet.

The seller notes he found the car not only covered in dust, dirt, and grime, but also with most of its exterior trim removed after it was left un-installed following the repaint. The rear spoiler and beltline trim has found its way back on the 6-Series, along with the unfortunate sidemarkers that were deemed necessary when federalized. It’s surprising to me that they were kept, as most repaints of cars like these make a point of filling in the holes left by the lights and returning the car to its smooth, factory appearance.

The interior remains in tidy condition, with leather Recaro bucket seats showing no obvious signs of deterioration. However, the rare brown dash – more commonly seen in European-market cars – is cracked, and finding a replacement will be no small feat. The M635CSI does have 90,000 miles on the clock, so it’s not exactly a time capsule – but the colors, desirable engine spec, and barn find intrigue all make the curb appeal quite strong with this example.

The seller has performed some limited improvements, ranging from a full coolant flush to removing and replacing the gas tank and installing a new fuel pump. The E24 sat idle for many years, even being taken off the road in the California system by the previous owner. Unfortunately, detailed photos in the seller’s Instagram feed do show rust in multiple places, bubbling up under the paint and also inside the jambs of the trunk. The rarity of this M635CSI demands that it be restored, and despite its flaws, there’s too much goodness here to do anything but bring this one all the way back.

And a proper gearbox. I’m not usually found of beige, but this BMW is rockin’ it. Nice car.

I thought the M635csi was the only Non M car (M3, M5, M6) to have the BS vin prefix. This car does not have that. Can somebody verify? I am not someplace where I can run the vin.
