Parked Since ’02: 1993 Ford Mustang GT

It was the end of the line for the Fox Body Mustang. Ushered in for the 1979 model year, the Foxes held tough through 1993 when this GT was produced. Revered in the wake of the shrunken Mustang II, it took a bit for the Fox to find its footing, which it certainly did by 1987. They remain a mainstay of Ford hot-rodding and are still sought after for not only their baseline performance but their modified potential as well. This ’93 GT fastback is located in Pompano Beach, Florida and is available, here on eBay for $10,600 with 43 bids tendered so far.

Parked by its second owner in 2002, the current seller acquired this 78K mile Mustang last April and now wishes to move it on. Some minor imperfections, small cracks, a faded bumper, things like that, are present but the red finish, straight body, and undamaged spoilers/skirts show well. The most obvious exterior misstep is the mismatched wheels. The seller states that he was going to install a set of chrome “Pony” wheels but never did. The fact that the hubs have been converted to a five lug format may preclude using original wheels. Nevertheless, the wheel matter can be easily sorted.

Under the hood is a 205 net HP, 5.o liter V8 engine. Interestingly, the ’87-’92 versions of this famous motor were rated at 225 net HP but Ford claimed the rating was incorrect and 205 net was the correct number. Whatever the reason, the seller claims, “The 5.0 motor runs very nice and has plenty of power while sounding amazing with the pure muscle exhaust tone!” Mechanical improvements include a new fuel tank, fuel pump, sending unit, water pump, radiator, plug wires, cap/rotor, and Flowmaster mufflers.  The seller adds that the T-5, five-speed manual transmission and clutch operate as intended. Due to its lengthy period of inactivity, the seller recommends that fluid changes be performed.

The interior of this GT shows very well. The seller notes, “The car is missing the radio (appears no factory wires are cut), the ashtray door doesn’t work, has small wear spot on driver side seat but minimal wear on the steering wheel and brake/clutch/gas pedals.” Again, minor matters that can be easily resolved or just ignored though a radio of some sort is always nice to have. The interior condition continues through the rear cargo area, which like the passenger compartment, is unmarred. The only thing out of place, and it is a typical problem, are the stretched- out map pockets on each door – it doesn’t take long for them to lose their shape.

The seller states, “I believe finding a car of this caliber in this condition is almost non-existent!” For the most part, I would agree. I have reviewed several, same era Fox-body Mustangs that were found in a similar condition, but most that I have encountered have been modified and thrashed. There is a day to go in the bidding, with no reserve, and this GT is trending in reasonable territory. I would be interested in hearing from those that have owned a Mustang from this collectible period. I owned a ’92 LX, 5.0 convertible that was a real handful, and consequently, I didn’t keep it for long. What are your stories?

The Mustang 5.0 may as well have been the official car of the New Jersey town I grew up in. Many of my high school friends had them, and I almost pulled the trigger on a black/red interior LX Notchback before I realized what the insurance would be. (I wound up with a Honda CRX Si, but that’s another story!)

This one looks decently clean, and could be the basis for a fun project. I appreciate that someone put the LX taillights on it, which to my eye always looked cleaner than the GT ones.

I seem to remember this car — has it been listed on BF previously?
