Parked Since 1980s: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The 1969 model year may have been the peak for performance-oriented Ford Mustangs, as no less than six of them were available. The GT, Boss, 302, Boss 429, Shelby GT350, Shelby GT500, and the new Mach 1 were all o the list. The latter, only available in the SportsRoof body style (aka fastback), came with a 351 cubic inch V8 as standard equipment, but you could opt for a motor as big as a 428. This one has had only two prior owners and has been off the road since 1987, so it will require both a mechanical and cosmetic intervention. Located in Appleton, Wisconsin, this Ford is available here on eBay for $28,999.99 (offers will be considered).

Though the pony car market was flush with competition by 1969, Ford still managed to sell 300,000 Mustangs, allowing it to keep its #1 spot in the space. Nearly half of Mustang production in 1969 were fastback models, of which nearly 72,500 were the Mach 1, an addition for ’69. A series of its own, the Mach 1 came with goodies like a matte-black scooped hood with pins, a competition suspension, a chrome pop-open gas cap, upgraded wheels with Goodyear Polyglas tires, chrome exhaust tips, a  deluxe interior, available spoilers fore and aft, and optional rear window louvers called SportSlats.

At the seller’s asking price, you’re buying a project car for nearly $30,000. The dealer acquired this Mustang from the second owner who had the car since 1981. For whatever reason, it was parked in 1987 and left untouched, except maybe to rinse it off. There is rust along all the lower extremities and inside the trunk, and the seller says the floors are bad, too. So, this car will end up being a body shop’s delight.

We don’t know which engine is under the hood here, but a 351 is likely and could have been had with either 2-or-4-barrel carburetion. The seller says the motor will turn over when prompted with ether, which suggests the fuel system will need a thorough cleaning. While the exterior has plenty of flaws, the interior looks pretty nice and may clean up just fine, saving you some time and money. As a piece of trivia, the Mach 1 got its name from a concept car called the “Levacar Mach 1” which was on display at the Ford Rotunda, hoisted on a cushion of air used as propulsion on a circular dais.

The VIN supplied by the seller on the ebay ad has a H in the engine code position. The H code is a 351 2V which in 1969 would be the 351 Windsor engine.

Didn’t the 4 barrel version also have a dual exhaust with the splitter tips and the rear valance with the “notches” for the tips? Can’t believe the ebay ad with the seller talking about how rare the car is! This Rustang could be yours for only $29k… unbelievable.

Interesting. Does anybody know where this is made? It does not say made in the USA. It would really be something else if we had 1960s Mustangs running around out there that are made in China!

    Wowa , 30 k for a rusty, crusty, low po v8 !

My priorities started shifting in my late forties , sold the 69 camaro and invested in real estate,
In my fifties, sold the 67 firebird and invested in more real estate
Stopped working full time at 56 so , as i look at the todays prices , i would have to go back to a full time job to feed my car addiction and i can confirm that its not going to happen !
If i ever get the urge again , i will quickly book a vacation by the sea somewhere and wait for the urge to pass !
Good luck to the one that wishes to spend another 50k on this nice project …

I’m still amused by the $30k price. Purchase the reproduction body for $18k plus shipping, plus shipping the car depending where you live. Over $50k before you look at the mechanicals, wiring, interior, etc. At the end of the day you have a reproduction 2 barrel 351 automatic Mach1.
