Parked Since ’92: 1972 MGB Roadster

The seller of this 1972 MGB roadster parked the car in 1992 due to insurance rates being too high, deciding then that he’d eventually tinker with the car in retirement. Now, retirement is here and a relocation is happening, and the long-stored car can’t come with him. Talk about a text book case in making sure you enjoy your classics when you can. Find the chrome-bumpered MGB here on craigslist in Worcester, Mass. for $2,300.

Thanks to Barn Finds reader Ikey H. for the find. The MGB looks surprisingly tidy for having been stored for so many years, as the seating surfaces, door panels, and dash top all look clean and usable as-is. Even the leather shifter boot presents well, and the seller notes that the MGB has been garaged since he originally purchased it in 1985. Even the radio looks OEM correct.

Given this is Massachusetts and Worcester is one of snowiest cities in the Bay State, I’d expect that rodents made their home in the MG during the colder months. However, I don’t see any obvious evidence of that, as the tell-tale signs of nest stuffing on the carpets and under the hood aren’t there. The engine doesn’t run and the seller says it hasn’t been started in 27 years.

Why you’d park a car in your garage solely due to high insurance costs and not at least take the time to fire it up weekly is beyond me. I actually count the Saturday “start-up” of my projects among the highlights of my week, but not everyone is wired that way. Fortunately, the price seems reasonable for a chrome-bumper car, but rust underneath is a big unknown.

    Deal!
If the engine can be freed up and will run ok, this would be a ton of fun for not much money.

Major bargain for a chrome bumper B. Doubt you’d find much rust on this one even in MA.

The British sports cars have such better styling then the Italian stuff. Without the rubber bumpers this should be more desirable. This would be loads of fun to drive.

I see a V-6 engine transplant in the making with this! Maybe even a small-block Chevy with aluminum intake and heads and a TH-350 could possibly fit! I personally wouldn’t waste the money to fix the antiquated tractor motor (basically) these cars came with.

Yes, sold. Solid cheap classics don’t appear often up here in salty “Woostah”, as we call it.

Never will understand the mentality behind parking a perfectly good car and letting it go to crap. I understand not driving it on the road, but a true car lover would at least keep it clean and running. It doesn’t cost much to do that.
