1974 Triumph TR6: Parts or Restore?

TR6

At first glance, you might dismiss this rusty Triumph as past the point of restoration – and you might be right. Located in Bel Air, Maryland and offered here on eBay, bidding on the Triumph is currently at $505 with reserve not met. Thanks to Jim S for this find! The seller is brutally honest: “This vehicle is a good parts car for someone…There is a lot of rust…What you see is what you get”, but there is one catch. Triumph TR2-TR6’s are old-fashioned body-on-frame construction. This means that cars can be kept on the road even with a lot of visible rust as long as the frame itself is sound. I have seen a lot of very rusty appearing TRs restored slowly by handy owners and driven the entire time. All exterior panels are available, as well as floors, and some (fenders and floors) are even off the original tooling. I should point out that the TR6 in particular has a vulnerable spot in the frame where the semi-trailing arms attach, and although there are repair pieces for that area it’s a difficult repair to make correctly. But if, and it’s a big if, that area is ok, this car is completely restorable. Does it make fiscal sense? Probably not. But if you really want a TR6 and can only afford to make it better little by little over a long time, this may be the only route available. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I would wonder about the chassis — the driver’s side rear wheel not being centered might be a bad sign.

Seller is right—parts car, unfortunately. There are too many of these around to justify the cost and bother of restoring it.

I’m starting to think I’m the only one crazy enough to take on something like this…but I’ve restored worse TR6’s.

Under a grand it is worth it for the parts. Drag it home and see if it is worth fixing or parting, but from what I have seen I have restored worst ones.
