Patina Pickup: 383-Powered 1967 Dodge D100

A Tucson Truck – this is one cool pickup! It was purchased new in Tucson, Arizona where it still lives with its second owner so it’s been in that nice, dry, hot climate for 54 years where I should have been for the last 54 years. The seller has this 1967 Dodge D100 listed here on eBay in Tucson and the current bid price is $4,750 but the reserve isn’t met.

We can go around and around on patina (i.e., surface rust) vs. a nice shiny light blue paint job and I can easily go either way. It’s like soup or salad, is one really better than the other, other than personal preference? I mean, we all know that greens/veggies are good for you, I was thinking taste-wise. I like the look of this old sunburned paint job now but this truck would look beautiful with new paint, too. The bed is appropriately rusty but not an upper-Midwest type of rust, just surface rust.

The seller says that the right front fender appears to have been replaced at some point, and the floors are rusty and should be replaced, but other than that it’s a solid desert denizen. The two-wheel-drive Dodge D-series of pickups came out in 1960 and lasted until 1993. The four-wheel-drive W-series was also available and I wonder what the bid price difference would be if this would have been a W100? Hagerty is at $7,100 for a #4 condition truck so this one has a long way to go.

As with a lot of southwest vehicles, the padded dash has been better days. Just think what your skin would look like after 54 years of having the sun beating on it. There is no third pedal here, this truck has an automatic transmission with a somewhat unusual dash-mounted shifter. Chrysler had so many options for transmissions that it’s mind-boggling. Manuals with floor shifters or column shifters, automatics with column shifters or dash-mounted shifters. And although not available on this truck, the famous push-button automatic.

The big thing with this truck other than the solid body is the big 383 cubic-inch V8 engine. This one would have had 258 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque. It appears to have a few new parts and pieces and power steering is definitely a bonus with a front end this heavy. The seller says that it will “fry the tires” and this would be a fun truck to own. Have any of you owned a Dodge pickup from this era? And the eternal question: patina or fresh paint?

If the floors are rusted through then southwest truck or not, it’s a rust bucket. Too bad, if the price wasn’t so high I’d buy it for the drive train.

Because one singular area needs metal replacement, the entire vehicle is a rust bucket? Granted there are no undercarriage photos, but it appears to just need floors and is a solid AZ truck. It probably sat outside for a long time with bad window seals so water collected in the pans. Thankfully you won’t be stripping this great truck of it’s drivetrain.

They did that dash mounted shifter on the A series vans as well.

I have a ’69 D100, 90K original miles, 318 auto. It has patina and I love her just the way she is. Still easy to get parts for these including pans & such. IMO the reason the prices hold are that you don’t see as many of these as the other big guys.

For me, redo the interior, fix any rust, add power steering and aftermarket a/c, make sure it’s properly safe to drive, driver quality paint job and keep and drive it the rest of my life.

It’s so cool just the way it is. I would put some floor mats in and just drive it.

I had a 66 Dodge passenger van (window van) that had the gear selector on the dash. Mine was the 318/904 setup, loved that van.
