Patriotic Bird: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am is said to be a one owner car being sold by a dealer in Temecula, California. The car has traveled an estimated 122,000 miles and is said to be a true survivor. However, there are a few things, most notably the hood decal and seat covers that are not stock. The Trans Am is listed here on eBay for $24,500 but there is a make an offer option. There are 23 days remaining in the listing. Many thanks to Mitchell G. for bringing this car to our attention.

This car is said to have its original engine and it still has its California air pump mounted to the front of the engine. In 1979, the only engine offered for the Trans Am in California was the L80 Oldsmobile 403 V8 engine with 185 horsepower and 315 lb ft of torque, paired with the Turbo 350 automatic transmission. This was also the base engine for the Trans Am in the other 49 states and an option on the Formula. In other states, buyers could choose between the L37 Pontiac 301 V8 engine with 150 horsepower and a 4-barrel carburetor, or the rare W72 Pontiac 400 V8 engine with 220 horsepower, available only with a 4-speed transmission.

The car does not appear to be heavily optioned other than a deluxe interior, air conditioning and rear window defogger. The car does not have t-tops or power windows but appears to have tilt steering. The hood scoop appears to remain in stock form (closed) and the radio is hooked to a power antenna in the front fender. With recovered seats and the aftermarket or custom hood decal, it is hard to justify calling this car a survivor. Maybe unmodified or close to stock is a better description.

The Trans Am is rolling on aftermarket chrome wheels and blackwall tires. The white paint and black interior is a classic look. Pontiac produced over 117,000 Trans Ams in the 1979 model year. This one looks to be in great shape.

Way too much money for a Trans Am that is nowhere close to original. GLWT.

I agree to disagree. Have you seen what goes for twenty four thousand on this web site? And the only thing unoriginal is the hood decal and seat covers? Not that I would be interested. I think Trans Am’s in general are over priced.

I’ll give u $24k if u can find me even one basic new 2 door car made today for that price, let alone 1 that’s rear wheel drive & can hold 4 people.

Way to much money for a cheap built low HP car when it was new.my 70 road runner cleaned the transams clock with 2 gears to spare. Crazy money for a rattling buck board! I digress. All of these cars , Mopar,Chevy , Ford prices are driving them into extinction which is a double edge sword. Feel sorry for the young gear heads that want but can’t afford them . ✌️

Your ’70 Roadrunner wasn’t smogged to death either. A Volkswagen from 1970 could give the ’79 TransAm a run for its money and look better doing.

Did your road runner ever encounter a ’73-’74 SD-455(preferably with no heavy factory options)?
Not sure if Calif SDs got an air pump.
I’m pretty sure most young gearheads(at least in my area) today only want fully loaded 4 door imports with a fart can muffler, totally blacked out windows all around, gangster sized side glass,& electronics inside up the wazoo.

Call it a hunch, but I feel like anyone interested in this car should inspect it in person and take a magnet.

I hate to disagree with a lot of you folks but being what the market is for trans am’s. I think this car is priced right. 1979 was one of the most reliable firebirds of the second generation. If I was to buy this I’d put period correct wheels and tires on it and enjoy it for what it is a paper tiger but what a nice looking paper tiger.

I really like this car except for the hood decal . . . It’s giving me puny penis syndrome ! Just sayin.

I wonder if the seller’s other vehicle is a Ram 2500 diesel with smoke stacks in the bed, a 12″ lift, and 42″ tires on 24″ wheels. I understand you can buy those mods as the “I have a small one” kit.
