Pennsylvania Barn Find: 1971 Jaguar E-Type

50210611-770-0

The magic of an E-Type nose poking its way out of a barn shouldn’t be lost on any fan of this site. Even if it’s a less-desirable raised headlight model, there’s no denying how attractive the car looks and how evocative the picture above is. Thanks to Robert R. for this find! This one is located in Middleburg, Pennsylvania, and is for sale here in Hemmings for $35,000. According to the seller, the car needs a clutch to be a driver. I believe that’s quite a job in an E-Type; maybe a reader can verify that? The seller is also including a new full rubber kit, a stainless steel exhaust system and some other new parts, and is said to run nicely. All the chrome is said to be there as well. The car was originally an air conditioned car, certainly nice in a coupe. While I know most, if not all of you would rather see a closed headlight early car, are you interested in this one?

You need to pull the engine & trans in order to change the clutch. Not a small job.

yes the cost of replacing the clutch would be a reason to park the car. with a bad clutch it would hard to test some of the other systems. interesting find.

For a car that needs a clutch replaced and the expense required to do so in this model, I think he is well above the mark price wise.

On the positive side: when you had the motor and trans out it would be the perfect time to clean up all those little things and then tuck them back in and know you had a really nice car! But, yes, if the price could come down a little, then I’d go ahead and take two of them!

Years ago Peter Egan devoted one of his columns in Road & Track to old E-types that got sold cheap, often to shops or their mechanics, because the owner didn’t want to shell out for a clutch replacement, which involved removing the engine & transmission as some people here have already mentioned. IIRC there might have been some of the front sunstructure that also needed to be removed. That’s how Peter got his E-type. He also got a few R&T columns out of owning that car.

Back in the 70’s a friend of mine who Wheels & Deals in cars picked up a 63′ Jag XJE Convert. that needed a Clutch. To change it you need to remove the front end & the Engine & Tranny. Even with the bad clutch we took it for a ride on the Southern State Pky here in NY, it was about 3:30 am with nobody on the road. A ride I’ll never forget even at 135 mph that car hugged the road, it felt like we were doing 65-70 mph & that was with a bad clutch.

This is not a $35k car. I’d love to have it, but there are better choices at that price. Too bad.

The seller has decided to jump on the bandwagon. The prices has gone out the roof for great examples of these cars. I have to agree with John, this is NOT a 35k car as much as the seller wants it to be.
