Perfect Patina: 1983 Dodge Ramcharger Prospector

Sometimes, the word patina can be overused. It’s understandable: patina is often the best word out there to describe how a vehicle has achieved some Hallmark of age that now gives it a certain vibe, or appearance. Unfortunately, sometimes patina is used to cover up the fact that a vehicle really is just old and rusty, but that’s a whole ‘nother concern. This 1983 Dodge Ramcharger Prospector shows off the best kind of patina which includes some amazing period-correct door and quarter panel graphics that have survived in incredible condition. Find the Ramcharger here on eBay with bids to $8,300 and the reserve unmet.

The seller notes that this Ramcharger is highly original with a near-spotless undercarriage and matching interior. I would say that description is not far off, and points to a truck that was carefully used and kept out of the salt and winter muck. The white-painted wagon wheels are the perfect choice for a truck like this, but it’s truly the decals and door applique that puts this one over the top for me. It’s hard to believe that what amounts to some stickers is such a game changer, but how often do you see a vehicle of this age with amazing decals like this Ramcharger has?

This truck sports the Prospector package as well as the Royal SE equipment group. The interior is in outstanding condition with blue cloth everywhere you look and not a rip or tear in sight. When it comes to patina, there’s also the aspect of how the colors and options match the era in which it was made, and the 1980s were a time in which a blue interior was not only expected, it was also quite popular. The same goes for the fake woodgrain-style trim on the doors and dash. I don’t see a CB radio which is about the only detail missing from a truck that otherwise looks like it just rolled of the dealer lot in 1983.

Little signs of wear like the edge of the hood pad insulation are not a big deal, and if anything, help to establish that this truck didn’t just roll out of the paint booth. The 5.2L V8 made around 150 horsepower at the time, and 255 lb-ft of torque. Fuel injection wouldn’t show up until later in the decade, and it’s fair to say the Ramcharger suffered a bit from the ongoing effort to increase fuel efficiency while sacrificing performance. Still, it didn’t much matter in a rig that was capable off-road and had decent towing capacity, not to mention the fact that it looked absolutely killer as this one does. I hope the seller isn’t pulling our leg about those decals being authentic, because it’s some of the best period-correct patina I’ve seen in a while.
