Pickup In The Bushes: 1964 Land Rover

001

This 1964 Land Rover diesel truck looks like it’s fighting a losing battle with the bushes on the passenger side. It’s located in Peabody, Massachusetts and is being sold here on eBay. The seller states in the ad that the reserve is $2,500 but “…you might win it for less.” The truck runs, drives and stops fine and appears to have relatively solid mechanical components. Even the 4-wheel-drive components are working. However, the tailgate is missing and the seller has concerns about the frame. There are places in the floor where it looks like patches were put on patches and there are still holes, so some issues definitely need to be addressed. There seems to be a lot of heavy surface rust in the frame pictures and some holes as well. Maybe an educated Barn Finds reader can tell us what to look for on Land Rovers, and whether or not this one passes muster at the price?

I like the truck, but it looks to be a parts car only, and I don’t have another!

This is an extremely rare vehicle, even in the rest of the world. It most definitely is worth saving. But I do caution the buyer. To restore this correctly,or even make it safe to travel,my advise is you better have great cash flow,or be able to do a majority of the work yourself. Part’s will be somewhat difficult to locate, but they are out there. And when found they probably won’t come cheap. There is a company that sell’s frame’s, Rover’s North! They are in Vermont. They are very knowledgable on Land Rover’s. They even produce their version of replacement part’s for reduced cost. But the quality I’ve seen is as good or better than originals.

old rovers the frame is the problem, box frame rust out from inside.
there are aftermarket companies remaking the frames but are expensive.
the bodies are aluminum and parts are available to restore.

theres a few companies over here ( UK ) make the frames but as above there not cheap. you can even buy a galvanized one. again as said most parts are available so it could be done but you would need deep pockets.

and yes even over here the early ones are pretty rare and demand good money even for ones in this condition

Great Find! Wrong coast for a project… Today I am going to the All British Field Meet in Portland, where there will be lots of these (in various configurations). Pretty cool rigs! Would be a bargain at $2500 or less!

Land rovers are never too far gone to restore, very simple to work one and the parts are unbelievably cheap

I’d be more concerned about the bulkhead than the frame. Frames are readily available. Bulkheads might be more of a challenge.

These are never to far gone, everything is available & sensibly priced. They are simple to work on, even bulkheads can be rebuilt as they are a mass of flat panels. I’m sure the many specialists in the UK would ship parts to the US. If you are concerned whether the vehicle will make money when done then probably not, but if you want one where you know whats been done & to have the satisfaction that you rescued it with your own hands then go for it.

This would be quickly snapped up if it was located over here in England. Old Landies are incredibly popular.

Up until about a year ago, this was my vehicle. It needs a complete frame over, new electrics, new seat box, new bulkhead, new door frames, hood repair, etc.
It has no value for its originality as it came from the factory with a petrol engine.
The only unique thing is that, at one point it was used as a tow truck, possibly for CP Railroad. I have only seen one other truck with the same paint “history” (red over orange over green) so if anyone knows anything about that, please respond.
The engine, although not having run in years, was in excellent condition and I for ice it from 1998-2005 in its current condition.
