Pierre Cardin Edition: 1973 AMC Javelin

While brand collaborations between car manufacturers and consumer product lines are nothing new, the Pierre Cardin edition AMC Javelins stand alone. Although purely cosmetic in nature, it stood apart for the daring interior color scheme it offered consumers who felt your standard vinyl bucket seats were far too muted. This Javelin here on Hemmings.com is said to need restoration and have rust issues, but the iconic interior remains quite serviceable. Thanks to Barn Finds reader PRA4SNW for the find.

I actually just laid eyes on a car with this same interior for the first time last week, and was shocked to see it continued on the headliner. Not only that, the colors are not what you’d expect, either, with shades of purple, pink, and white, which look great with the crimson exterior this Javelin wears. While I’m sure there’s rust lurking somewhere as the seller discloses it but doesn’t show it, the interior appears to be holding up quite well.

The other tell-tale sign this is a Pierre Cardin edition are the badges on the fenders, which are still affixed to this car. I imagine those are near impossible to find, and seeing the matching paint under the hood and along the rad support may indicate this Javelin wears original paint. As others have mentioned on previous Javelin listings, some parts are hard to come by but it looks like the near-impossible to source grill is in good shape here.

The seller is asking $4,350 for the Javelin, which seems fair for such a rare specimen. If you’re looking for a more affordable project with a less eyeball-popping interior, consider this recent Barn Finds Exclusive listing for a 1969 AMC Javelin SST, complete with a groovy patina’d exterior all of its own. If you had to own a Javelin, would you choose one with a Pierre Cardin interior or opt for a more sedate color scheme?

I always thought that this iteration of the Javelin was one of the most “muscular” looking of the muscle cars. A cool car, made even cooler with the addition of this unique interior design(IMO)! :-)

I’d love to have one either way, although I’m a little more partial to the pre-‘71 Javelin.

This grill isn’t impossible to source, it’s the AMX Javelin of 71 thru 74 that’s impossible to source. They are very different grills, the Javelin and the Javelin AMX of 73 and 74. Completely different. I know because I can’t find one for my Cardin AMX! they go for big bucks.

Love those special edition cars, especially the interiors, from the 60’s & 70’s.

When I was little, my best friend’s mom got divorced and the only car she could afford was a friend’s ’72 AMC Hornet Sportabout with Gucci interior. She HATED it and called it “gucky.”

I love all Javelin’s and AMX’s. There is just something about them that really appeals to me. I do not like the lack of information both from Hemming’s and BF, this time. Probably no info due to lack of being able to contact seller unless you are interested in buying. Oh well… Anyway, as I am not a collector or restorer and do no have very deep pockets, I would not bid any more than $3,000.00 for it. So much more work to be done. Out of my range. But, thanks BF for this one. Keep ’em comin’!!

They are super sharp when the colors are restored.
