Plenty of Interest: 1970 Plymouth Duster 340

Dating from the first year of production, this 1970 Plymouth Duster 340 was loaded with some nice optional extras when it was new. Time has taken a bit of a toll on the car, but it does look like a solid prospect for restoration. Bidding on the Duster has been quite spirited, as there appear to be at least 20 people who can see some real possibilities with the car. This has pushed the bidding to $5,049, with the reserve now met. If you’d like to join in the fun, you will find the Duster located in Rural Valley, Pennsylvania, and listed for sale here on eBay.

The outward appearance of the Duster looks quite promising. The Blue Fire paint will need a freshen up, but there doesn’t appear to be much in the way of major rust issues with the car. It looks like there is a small area of rust in the lower fender on the driver’s side, and a couple of spots either side of the rear wheel well on the passenger side. The owner says that the car will only require some minor patching to address any other rust issues and that the frame rails are fine. It looks like all of the external trim and chrome is present, although items such as the bumpers look like they might be due for a trip to the plater.

The good news with the Duster is that it is a numbers-matching car, with the original 340ci V8 engine and A-727 transmission. The bad news is that the engine is currently on a stand for prospective owners to inspect, and it is locked. The owner will put the engine back into the car to transport it, but it isn’t clear whether it can be saved. We don’t get any photos of the interior, but we know that it is black with a bench seat and column shift. We also know that it was ordered with the Rally Pack gauges, wood-grain dash, a 3-spoke wheel, and 3-speed wipers.

I’m torn by this Duster because I really like it, but I’d also love to know exactly what is going on inside the engine. With any sort of luck, whatever it is can be fixed because it would be nice to be able to keep the car numbers-matching. It is a solid looking car, and the amount of interest that it has generated on eBay seems to indicate that I’m not the only person who likes it.

I think I’ll bid on it just to save it from that fate.

Buyers didn’t have to “order” the Rallye dash cluster; it was standard equipment for Duster 340s. It was based on the 1969 Barracuda dash.

Actually back to 1967 on a Barracuda as it was standard…..options would include a Tach or a motor meter/vacuum gauge or the rarest – a clock….and the S cars got a 150 speedo……

We used to call these things ‘dust-eaters’ back in the day.

Excellent candidate for a restoration and if the original engine can’t be saved, throw in a replacement and have a blast. Theses cars are great looking that really stand out in any color. BTW, I wouldn’t mind seeing what looks like a ‘ Cuda in the plastic bubble…

Is that a “Carcoon”? Has anyone here used something like this for storage? How do you like it? Considering one for my best car and winter storage. Mice can be a problem for me, no matter how hard I try.

I believe the bid is on the start of the high side. The motor appears to of been left out in the weather for some time and probably full of water. It can be rebuilt, but at a costs that would hinder the 340 upgrade. A profitable show car no, but a fun daily driver, yes. Not sure what is meant by”nice optional extras”, because it does not have power steering or AC and probably no power brakes. It does have the light package, but no decals. I believe it was hit on the driver side grill area, do to misalignment of grill and head light.

I’d warm up that mill, put a 4 speed in and drive the snot out of it. Just curious,Mo, how would you go about making an electric car out of it? Power? Battery storage? Controls? Good luck to the new owner!!
