The LeMans Sport was a model of the Pontiac intermediate produced from 1970 to 1972. We suspect it was intended as a cross between the LeMans Sport and GTO, providing buyers with GTO-like looks and performance at more affordable insurance rates. The seller has a very nice 1971 LeMans Sport that has been decked out with a freshly built Chevy 350 cubic inch V8. Located in University Place, Washington, this sweet ride is available for $19,900 OBO here on craigslist as a tip from Barn Finder “Curvette”.

Pontiac’s LeMans Sport could be had with a bucket seat interior, much like you could get in a GTO. And, in 1971, they made all of Pontiac’s engines available in the LeMans Sport, including the 455 V8. So that could partly explain why GTO sales were down from 40,000 to 10,500 in 1971 vs. 1970. And what were LeMans Sport sales in the same body styles in 1971? About 38,500 units.

For whatever reason, the seller or a predecessor dropped a Chevrolet 350 CI V8 into this Pontiac. But it was tweaked during the build with aluminum heads, Roller Rockers, and substantial bling. Instead of about 300 hp, this engine with 5,000 miles puts out 385 horses. The transmission is a TH-350 and you’ll find power steering and brakes. A factory tach is present, just like with a GTO. The suspension has also been updated and includes a two-inch drop.

In the looks department, the interior is new with OEM patterns and colors (just like 1971). The blue paint appears quite nice (a respray?), and the seller doesn’t believe you will find any corrosion at 55,000 miles. If you’re in the market for a nice Pontiac from this vintage and don’t object to Chevy power, will they come any nicer for under $20k? BTW, if you insist on a Poncho powerplant, the seller has a 400 CI motor available separately.

That is one fine Pontiac. Pretty much what l would want if I was shopping for one. Nice!
Nice looking machine with a potent punch. 2door hardtop 70’s GM muscle(ish) car for under $20k.
i would put a poncho motor back in this cheviac. other than that, screw up this is a sharp car in great colors
Agreed Wonder what happened to the Pontiac engine and transmission.
He should’ve just put an LS in it with a 6L80 trans if he was gonna screw it up with Chevy power! If he has a 400 Pontiac engine already he should’ve put that in it and upped the price so people that want an all Pontiac version don’t have too mess with putting it all back to Pontiac! Personally, I would’ve found and built a 455 Pontiac engine and started with that and increased the asking price accordingly. I guarantee he wouldn’t have had any problem selling it fast for way more than $20k!
Right keep it all Pontiac. My Dad has a 1970 Pontiac Le Mans sport with a rebuilt Pontiac and and trans by me years ago 350/350 with A/C. Its not as fast as a 455 but a nice cruiser all Pontiac!!
i agree with you way more than 20k. most likely 30k
Nice car and obviously I have nothing against Chevy (I own two of them), but I never liked the idea of just dropping a Chevy engine in a non-Chevy GM car. Pontiac engines truly had their virtues back then. One belongs in this car.
In 70,71,72 Canadian built Lemans came with a Chevy 350
Too much money for a car thats been mishandled , its a nice body , but that chevy engine has to go
My brother had a 72 Le Mans Sport primered shell he bought, that came with all the interior to install, just needed a drivetrain. So he picked up an Olds Delta 88, w/455, which we proceeded to smoke the tires off, around the block a few times, before the transplant. Man that car was a BLAST of fun for cheap!
