Price Drop: 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS

The enormous sales success of the Fourth Generation Chevrolet Impala means we consistently see nice examples crossing our desks at Barn Finds. However, it is a rare treat when two immaculate ’65 Impala Super Sports appear within twenty-four hours. The one featured yesterday was modified, but this dazzling example seems to be essentially unmolested. It presents beautifully, and I must say a big thank you to Barn Finder Curvette for spotting it listed here on eBay in Indianapolis, Indiana. The seller set their BIN for this beauty at $30,000 OBO. Interestingly, the listing text suggests that the BIN figure represents a $2,000 price drop, and keeping a few greenbacks in your pocket could be a bonus.

This Impala looks stunning, helping to explain the badge’s overwhelming success in 1965. The seller states that it features new suspension, and the photos suggest that they may have dropped the ride height as part of that process. The Impala is inherently low and svelte, but this one looks even lower and svelter (is that a word?). Adding to the interest is the claim that the paint is the original shade of Rally Red. That’s a head-scratcher, because Chevrolet’s marketing material and ’65 color charts indicate that it wasn’t available to Impala buyers. However, I do believe that this is probably Regal Red, which is very similar. The SS looks extremely nice, with no significant cosmetic issues visible. The paint is great, there are no dings or dents, and I see nothing suggesting the presence of rust. The trim is in overall good condition, and the fender skirts accentuate the car’s length.

This Impala’s interior doesn’t appear to contain any nasty surprises. Trimmed in Black vinyl, it presents exceptionally well. The upholstered surfaces are so close to perfect that it doesn’t matter. The carpet is excellent, as are the dash and the pad. An aftermarket gauge cluster hangs below the dash and is the only visible addition. The first owner didn’t load it to the brim with factory options, but with air conditioning, bucket seats, a console, a clock, and a pushbutton radio, life inside this Impala would still feel pretty special.

According to the air cleaner decal, this Impala features the 300hp version of Chevrolet’s 327ci V8 under the hood. The roll call also includes a two-speed Powerglide transmission, a 12-bolt Posi rear end, power steering, and power brakes. It is fair to say that drivetrains don’t come much more bulletproof than this, meaning that this sixty-year-old classic could conceivably be plying the roads when it celebrates its 120th birthday. The seller states that they would happily drive this Impala anywhere, confirming that it is in excellent mechanical condition. Therefore, flying in and driving home is a valid option for the new owner.

It is easy to understand why Chevrolet scored a home run with the 1965 Impala. The company got the styling spot-on, which is half the battle when you’re trying to win the hearts and money of the buying public. This Super Sport is a perfect example of that achievement, and these classics are more popular today than when they rolled off the showroom floor. The statistics look healthy in what are the listing’s early days, which is why I believe this Impala will find a new home.

The trunk lid is either not closed or misaligned. Although I like fender skirts,
(IMO) these detract from the look of this car; the chrome wheel well trim is still in place which highlights the add on nature. Twin antennae are period cool! GLWTA!! :-)

Nice car. I bet the AC would work better with a belt on it.

The heater would work better too, if hoses. Signs of incomplete installation or deferred maintenance?

I can’t see $30K for this car in its current condition. As unattractive as the fender skirts are, they’re not the show stopper. The rear bumper is slightly askew while the the trunk lid alignment stands out like a sore thumb. The front bumper has its own version of level instead of following the grill bars. This car may have been lowered a touch as well.

Put the two ’65 Impala SS cars side-by-side for a comparison and this car’s negatives stand out.
