Project Bee: 1971 Dodge Charger Super Bee

A Dodge Charger Super Bee? Surely you jest. To quote the great sage of our time, Leslie Nielsen in the movie Airplane!, “I am serious. And, don’t call me Shirley.” This serious muscle car can be found here on eBay in Northford, Connecticut. The current bid price is just $1,875 and there is less than a day left on the auction.

By 1971, the former home of the Super Bee, the Dodge Coronet, had moved the line to four-door sedans and wagons and that wasn’t going to work. The Super Bee name was added to the 1971 Dodge Charger lineup as one of six models. Color-keyed bumpers were available and that sure would have been unique to see on this Hemi Orange colored Super Bee.

You can see that this one needs a lot of work. The seller says that the floors are solid and they look like they are, but there is rust in the trunk and basically all over this car in spots. The frame is reportedly solid which is nice, but it won’t be a quick fix to bring this car back to life again.

The interior needs a full gut job. It looks like this car was used as a dumpster which is unfortunate. I always like to see vehicles at least picked clean of garbage before photos are taken of a car in order to sell them. It just makes perspective buyers question the condition of everything if the empty bottles and other junk aren’t taken out first. But, it is what it is. Anyone who is really interested in this car will look past the stuff packed in there and see the future jewel beyond the garbage.

This is Dodge’s 383 cubic-inch V8 which according to the VIN is a 300-hp version with a 4-barrel, which appears to be missing. That’s worrisome especially in a climate like Connecticut which gets a fair amount of rain and snow. Actually, it’s worrisome anywhere to have a giant opening into the engine like that. This whole car needs a big-time restoration and given that it isn’t a 440 or 426 Hemi car, I wonder if it’ll end up being nut-and-bolt restored? Have any of you owned a ’71 Charger Super Bee?

This is a “unibody” car; the body and frame are one and the same.

What a shame. The only year of the Super Bee Charger, and this guy has turned one into a rare model rusted out garbage can.
    Whadda maroon!

I’ll never understand why people let a beautiful car get in this shape and then want to sell it after it turns to crap..

It’s already bid over $500 more than I would pay. At the very least it needs a trunk and a partial floor replacement. I’d wager it’s going to need both quarters replaced. So there’s $12,000 to get in clean metal then $3000 more to get it in paint. $5000 to freshen the 383/727. $3000 for interior and about another $4-5000 in incidentals. All that work and headache to break even?

Column shift automatic, 383 car. Not worth restoring. Sell the hood and scrap the rest.

Whoever bought this car would probably be better off turning it into a G-Machine if they wanted to make a profit on it.

hard to believe this guy put this rust bucket for sale and left it full of garbage. Makes all he says about it null and void, hard to take the whole thing seriously. SMFH. Sorry for the negativity. What makes these people tick?

Horrendous mistreatment of a one year only classic. I’d hate to see what he did with the Pontiac in the background.

Why rent it when you can buy one?
