Project Porsche: 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera

When discussing iconic vehicles from the 1980s, it isn’t shocking in the slightest if the Porsche 911 comes up in conversation. These powerful and attractive sports cars are incredibly sought after by collectors, with restored examples fetching big bucks these days. While this 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera that’s here on eBay is a project, it has serious potential to become a head-turner.

This 911 is available in Lewiston, Maine with a clean title. The seller notes that while this is a running and driving example, they are moving onto other projects.

Though most of the car is a gold color, the vehicle’s original color is the Meteor Metallic paint featured on the front of the body. The original front end had rust issues, which led to the replacement panels, while the previous owner of the vehicle performed the fiberglass widebody conversion.

I’m a huge fan of the genuine BBS wheels, which are an excellent style upgrade on a quintessentially ‘80s vehicle such as this Porsche.

Inside the cabin, you’ll find a rather tidy black interior, with the only noticeable change being a period-correct Alpine radio head unit and some aftermarket speakers. Additionally, this 911 features a pair of factory Recaro sport seats.

Of course, there’s the drivetrain – a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter flat-six cylinder engine, which pairs to a 5-speed manual transmission to drive the rear wheels. The combination has 170,950 miles on it, with the seller mentioning that it underwent a rebuild in the early 2000s. This Porsche also features a newer fuel tank, upgraded headers, and a Dansk stainless steel exhaust system. While this is a running and driving example, the seller notes that it has not been on the road since 2006, and they do not recommend that any prospective buyers try to drive it home.

At the time of this article being written, bidding is at $15,100. Would you restore this Porsche to its original Meteor Metallic paint color, or would you go for gold?

I might try to de-widebody the rear guards if it were mine.

Not a big fan of widebody or whale tail but it looks like the conversion was done properly and the combination works on this vintage of P-car. My first reaction was to paint it Guards Red, but the gold keeps growing on me and the BBS rims match nicely. If this stays low (which I doubt it will) it would be a relatively cheap entree to the Porsche Drivers Club.

Do they still wear Gucci loafers and string back driving gloves?

Gold, is the worst color ever, even on a Porsche!
