Project With Parts Galore: 1970 Pontiac Firebird

Early second-generation Pontiac Firebirds continue to draw attention for their clean lines, solid performance options, and strong enthusiast following. This 1970 Pontiac Firebird Coupe, currently offered on Facebook Marketplace in Hampton, Tennessee, presents an interesting opportunity for someone looking to take on a project that comes with both challenges and a sizable collection of extra parts.

The car is described as having 100,000 miles, an automatic transmission, and a Pontiac 400 engine, though the seller notes they are unsure of the engine’s current condition. It carries a clean title and is reported to be paid off. According to the listing, the car does not have any significant damage or major problems noted beyond what’s already disclosed.

One important detail is that the Firebird was involved in Flood Helen. The seller is upfront about this and still considers it a “cool Firebird,” leaving it to the next owner to decide how to move forward. For buyers comfortable assessing flood-affected vehicles, transparency like this is critical, and it’s something that should be factored into both inspection and restoration plans.

Where this listing becomes especially interesting is the large assortment of parts included with the car. The seller states that multiple wheels and tires come with it, including two 295/50/15 tires and one 295/60/15. Beyond that, the parts stash includes two Formula hoods, three early 1970s Firebird noses, extra driver and passenger-side fenders, and a new headliner. For someone restoring or modifying an early second-gen Firebird, having this many hard-to-find panels and components on hand could save considerable time and money.

The car is listed as gray with a black interior – while clearly not installed, keeping things fairly neutral and flexible for a future build. With a Pontiac 400 under the hood—even if its condition is currently unknown—this Firebird still checks an important box for many buyers who prefer traditional Pontiac power.

At an asking price of $8,500, this Firebird is positioned as a project rather than a turnkey driver. It’s best suited for someone who understands what they’re buying, plans to inspect thoroughly, and values the included parts as much as the car itself. Whether the goal is a restoration, a period-style build, or a long-term project, this Firebird offers a starting point that could go in several different directions.

My favorite of the firebirds are the 70-73 formulas. I settled for a 76 formula project a couple of years ago and its been quite a learning experience for me having only built mopars most of my years having to figure out assembly and interchangeability within the years has been quite a task and I’ve made some mistakes along the way. I’m now in deeper than if I’d have bought a turnkey unit but with that being said I’m a slow learner and I’ll probably do it again.

Flood car. Strip, (including electricals, been here before with flood cars) rotisserie the body, and go to work as a complete restore. Needles to say that the engine has to be disassembled. I love the ’70-73 Firebirds also. But not ready to do a restoration on one. From what I can see the body shell looks to be rot free. So it doesn’t look like there would be too much to do, body wise. The price seems high to me. If the body is in in good shape. Then maybe $3,500???
