The second-generation Dodge Charger may have been the turnaround car of the 1960s. From a second-year low of less than 16,000 units in 1967, a redesign of Chrysler’s B-bodies brought that number up to more than 92,000 in 1968 (with a similar follow-up in 1969). Though there are markings to the contrary, this Charger “R/T” is an admitted clone, having begun life as a Charger SE with a 383 cubic inch V8 (a 440 is present now). From some underbrush in Norwalk, Connecticut, this Dodge is available here on eBay where the current bid is $31,700 with the reserve still in play.
We’re told that this Charger “ran when parked” but that was at least 15 years ago. It needed a new starter though other work had just been done, like a new carburetor, distributor, and alternator. We don’t know when the cloning attempt of this auto took place, but it was likely before it became dormant. With a correct 440 V8 that the R/T would have had, this car has four-wheel drum brakes where disc brakes should be in place up front. The Charger here has a 727 automatic transmission and its condition isn’t mentioned.
Added to the mix is a dual exhaust with headers, an upgraded Mopar distributor, and American Racing Outlaw wheels with BFG tires (how new?). Stuff that was not working when the car died was the speedometer and odometer so the reading of 25,000 miles should be underestimated. The interior will need some attention and the car comes with new seat covers (but for a 1968 Charger)m headliner, and carpeting.
We don’t know if the Charger was painted white when new but what’s there now though it looks more like primer. It was also either a two-tone Dodge or had a vinyl top given the presence of chrome trim on the pillars. There is no mention of rust, and the body seems to be in generally fair condition, perhaps leading to the level of bidding seen so far. Due to the seller’s schedule, advance showings of the vehicle before the end of the auction are not possible.
There is a spot I know where a 1969 Charger, green with a black vinyl top, sits disintegrating and sinking into the earth. It’s been there for a minimum of 25 years that I can personally verify. The old lady in the adjacent house has been offered large sums of money for it in the past but has turned all of them down, reportedly saying she would rather turn it into a planter than sell it.
Bet there is an interesting story as to why she wants to keep it.
Pure cussedness on her part.
I know where a blue Daytona has been noisily rusting away in Michigan. 😢 it’s been stripp of many things
69 SEs had a wood grain dash. This one does not. And usually well-optioned with power acc. Manual brakes?
I Still have my 69 Charger R/T S/E 440-4 speed that I bought BRAND NEW. I didn’t want Disc brakes because at that time I had never worked on them so mine has Non Power Drum Brakes. Never had any problem stopping. If you got Power brakes you got Discs. S/E’s did have wood grained dashes and consoles. They also had Leather front seats, not back. That by the way was a $250 option. Mine is non A/C because I didn’t want to rob any power from that 440. I didn’t get the Hemi because it blew head gaskets and only had a couple month warranty, and this was my only car at the time. Mine had a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty and I used it. The Dana 3.55 posi started to hum at about 3 years so I waited till 4 and 1/2 years and took it in. They said how will you pay and I handed them the Warranty card. Needless to say they were not happy. It had to be completely torn down to replace the bearing that was bad. I only raced 3 Hemi’s and beat them all. Been garaged since 1975.
“No showings due to complicated schedule”…..That seems a little suspicious to me. I’d never pay that kind of money for a car without seeing it in person. Already up to almost $32,000
Wish I had upward of 30 grand to throw away! A clone that ran when parked because of a starter? Ummmm why? Why not put a starter in it and get it running? Ummmm all the new stuff put in 15 yrs ago is not any longer new. Sitting in undergrowth and check please! Run forest run!
