Ran When Parked: 1977 Pontiac Formula

For Pontiac, 1977 was a big year. Smokey and the Bandit was in the movie theater and Pontiac sales of all four models of the Firebird were hitting all time highs. We appreciate Mitchell finding this 1977 Pontiac Formula for sale here on Craigslist. It is located near Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania. This one is definitely a project and the seller is asking $4,500.

The interior is a combination of tiger skin and dirt! Someone cut a hold in the console for a cup holder. The car does not have many creature comforts on the interior like power windows. But the car did leave the factory with an automatic transmission and air conditioning. The seller states that the odometer shows over 66,000 miles and ran when parked. Not sure how long ago that was because this car is going to need a lot of work just to get it safe to drive.

There is not mention in the ad what the engine in the car is but as you can see, it is not running. There is no fan, fan shroud or radiator.  The air conditioning compressor is missing as are all the belts on the front of the engine. An aftermarket air cleaner sits on top of the engine along with spark plug wires in various and sundry locations! The standard engine in the 1977 Formula was the 301 cubic inch V8 engine with a 2 barrel carburetor that was rated at 145 horsepower. Many Formulas were produced with the Pontiac 350 or 400 engine with a 4 barrel.

With the glare of the sun, it is hard to even see the Code 19 black paint. The seller admits that car is rusty but the pictures of the undercarriage indicate that it is more the rusty. Crunchy might be a better description because the runs is extensive. At a minimum, the brake lines and fuel lines will need to be replaced for safety reasons.

The seller says in the ad he no longer needs it, 19 days on the market suggests he’s not the only one who feels that way.

It’s more of a parts car than restoration project, he’ll be lucky to get a fraction of his asking price.

Ain’t them there Sparkalators supposed to be inserted in that Pontiac engine, somewhere? How’d it run, when parked?

This bird may have a bit of a time leaving Sugarloaf and climbing over those Pocono mountains.⛰️

The Bandit wouldn’t have made it out of Texarkana in this.

I disagree…a “parts car” would actually imply that it had some useable parts left which this car does not. This is scrap.

“It ran when parked” is a lot like “I was asleep before I was awake”. This thing is worth exactly whatever your local scrap metal guy will give you for it.

Love the ’70-71 Firebird Formula’s better…better stance…and just something about them that I always give two thumbs up….I agree this isn’t no long-term project but simply for parts.
