Rare 2-Door Wagon: 1957 Mercury Voyager

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Similar to the Rambler Cross Country, the Voyager was a line of pillarless hardtop station wagons offered by Mercury for 1957-58. They came with either two or four doors, but the 2-door was less practical and found fewer buyers in 1957 as just 2,286 rolled off the assembly line. The Mercury Turnpike Cruiser name applied to hardtops sedan models. This one is a project that looks partially finished (or started) and needs someone else to pick up where the seller left off. Located in Poulsbo, Washington, this Mercury is available here on eBay where two bids stand at $2,550.

For 1957, Mercury’s wagons would be badged differently than its sedans, which offered a Turnpike Cruiser but not in the wagon body style. The Voyager, like the seller’s edition, was slotted between the base level Commuter and upscale Colony Park with woodgrain paneling. The seller’s naming reference might be because the 368 cubic-inch “Turnpike Cruiser” V8 was optional on the Voyager and could be the motor that the seller has finished rebuilding. It was rated at 290 hp and only available with the 3-speed push button Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission.

We’re told the seller has too many projects and is the reason this Mercury needs to move on. From what else is there in his garage, that’s likely true. The front clip is off the wagon and the seller has a rust-free replacement clip coming along. New rocker panels are also offered, but the floors have several see-through spots that the buyer will need to take care of. We told everything is there except for the windshield.

The V8 motor is ready to go back in the car, along with new mounts, rocker shafts, and a bunch of other items. The wheels and tires are new and haven’t left the garage since being mounted. Indicated mileage is just 51,200 but that doesn’t matter given the amount of work that will be needed. Most of the interior is beyond saving and this, that, and the other thing will need replacing. These wagons remind me a bit of the Chevy Nomad but are available for far less money. The top dollar for the 2-door Voyager, according to Hagerty, is $37,000.

Definitely worth restoration. These are as scarce as wagons get for this period, and being the HT variety adds to the collectability.

    ‘Indicated mileage is just 51,200’

    Cue laugh track.

Hardtop, just “hardtop”. “Pillarless” hardtop is redundant.

Kind of like a “Split Window” ’63 Corvette –
as all ’63 hardtops were split window cars.
I remember when our family got together
in the early ’60’s in Sumner,WA.A couple of
the relatives showed up in their late ’50’s Ford-
      wagons – two toned,of course.

Maybe Bing works differently than google, but Bing didn’t find a hardtop Rambler. Buick had the hardtop Caballero, but don’t think there were any two doors. MoPar may have built something like this Merc?

    The pictured engine is a 312 y-block.

If anyone in the midwest has a parts car, I need the roof and side glass from a ’57-’60 Merc wagon.

      Jetfire88,

Aren’t the roof and side windows the same as on a Ford Wagon? If so, they are a lot easier to find.

Unfortunately, Bill, other than big mechanical driveline things, nothing interchanges twixt Ford and Merc in ’57-60. That was when Ford decided the Merc should be its own man and stand on its own four wheels (lasted 4 years, oh well!).

Cant be too many of these left ; Mercurys get kind of forgotten in the Ford world . Its going to need a ton of work though

Never knew they made these. Likely because although Dad was a “Merc” guy, station wagons were never on his “shopping list”. My second car was Dad’s former car. Top of the line ’57 Merc hardtop. 312, four barrel, with the push-button trans. White with black top and within “fins”. Same interior. Lovely car.

You guys have had some interesting Mercury wagons lately and this one is no exception. And it’s a 2 door too! Rocker panel and floorpans are more than I want to tackle but this one deserves to be done right. Rebuilt engine is a plus any chance he could Install it before he sells it? Great find
