Rare 5-Speed: 1985 BMW 733i and Parts Car

If you’re a fan of European big body sedans that can hustle better than anything its size should, you might like the E23-chassis BMW 7-Series, one of the last eras of BMW’s flagship that can be found with a 5-speed fairly frequently. Yes, the next generation E32 was available with a stick, but those are near impossible to find. This seems like a deal for anyone who likes the idea of a sport sedan actually being sporty, as the seller is listing his running ’85 733i sedan with a parts car here on Facebook Marketplace for just $2,000!

While the parts market for these 7-Series is fairly limited due to fewer and fewer enthusiasts keeping them on the road, there’s still easily $2,000 in parts on both of these cars. You might own them for far longer than you’d like if your plan is to part them out, but eventually, rust-free body panels will sell and the drivetrains work in a variety of 5- and 7-Series models. The 5-speed alone in the running 733i is very desirable to anyone who might own a gray-market 7-Series with the rare Europe-only turbocharged inline-six, as you can use this transmission to make that car into an Autobahn rocket ship.

The seller doesn’t tell us much about how this 733i ended up parked in the garage and seemingly hacked up a bit, with wires hanging down from the steering column. This usually indicates an electrical fault of some kind that he went hunting for, and presumably, was unsuccessful in remedying. The Pacific Blue leather is in tough shape, but this is one of the best colors you could get in an 80s BMW interior. It’s not torn, so hopefully, some leather dye will solve most of the cosmetic issues. The seller has put 350,000 miles on this 7-Series, which is a testament to how overbuilt they were.

Here’s the parts car, which still wears its original “TRX” wheels and tires. Of course, finding tires for these wheels is cost prohibitive, but it’s still nice to see an old BMW wearing these unusual wheels. It also indicates that this supposed parts rig could be better than expected, as most cars have lost their TRX wheels by now. Perhaps this one was never messed with? Regardless, as you can see in the top photo, there are a few other cars lurking in the background, and it makes me curious about what else may be hidden about the cinder block building this desirable 5-speed car is hidden in. Do you think this inline-six equipped 7-Series can be put back into use with nearly 400K on the clock?

Two 7 series for 2K – who would have thought this would be something we would ever see.

These are very nice cars and am ambitious person may be able to put a good one together, but even if you just bought them to part out, you would be ahead of the game.
