Chevrolet built a lot of Chevelle Malibu sport coupes in 1972 – 212,388 of them, to be precise. But the seller believes this car could be 1 of 1 based on its original paint/vinyl top combination. It has a 350 cubic inch V8 that has had some performance modifications. The car is currently located in Albert, Kansas but will be in Kansas City soon. It’s available here on craigslist, but the seller hasn’t decided on a price yet. But he believes it has the potential of being a $25-30,000 automobile.
The seller provides only a couple of photos of the Malibu, so his description of the car will have to suffice. He says the factory color combination on the body tag is 14-H, Pewter Silver with a matching vinyl top. But his research concludes no such code was supposedly available on a Chevelle that year, a car he recently found in a barn. We’re not sure how important the body tag issue is now because the car is no longer that color now. But it has a white interior, also said to be rarely ordered. No mention is made of its running condition. Instead of cash, the seller may be interested in trading for a finished 1970 El Camino or 1972 or earlier Corvette. So how’s this for a mystery?
I’m not an Engineer, or Rocket scientist, or Surgeon, but doesn’t that originality go away when you have it painted? It’s no different than having a non-numbers matching engine or trans. I think the value is lost when you change the color. And I am not a racist, color shouldn’t matter, All Cars Matter.
I bought my ’64 Vette 20 years ago, before online photo ads were a big thing. The ad I saw said black/black ’64. I called the guy and we talked for probably half an hour and he mentions silver/blue and I’m like wait, the ad says black. He says well it’s black underneath. To him all that mattered was what the trim tag said. Anyway bought the car and planned to have it brought back to black but it’s been 20 years so….
That’s a lot of money to be asking for so few pics. I mean not even one of the body tag?!? I’ve got zero problem with flippers, but come on, put a little effort and homework into things, especially when you’re asking a premium.
Back in the day a friend of mine factory ordered a 1975 Monte Carlo Landau. He ordered it with all the performance stuff including the 454 and positraction. It was black, had a red swivel bucket interior and a silver Landau vinyl top. It’s the only silver vinyl top Chevy that I ever remember seeing.
Ho-hum 350 2bbl automatic MALIBU.
MAYBE there’s potential here, , but there’s that vinyl is gonna hide a world of hurt guaranteed. This guy has been watching too much Barret Jackson on tv.
A car that is painted silver is a silver car.
A car that is painted blue is a blue car.
Its a 72 Chevelle….buy it because you want it, not because of a tag that no longer has meaning.
I’d like to get some of that chutzpah the owner of this vehicle has, to even insuate the worth of it, and the # of the guy that supplies him with his party supplies
I will offer him my Vette, if he gives me the car and 50K, and you pay shipping on both cars. Sound like a deal?
Car has potential, but at what price. Sounds like he is looking for someone who recently won the Lottery.
Pewter Silver is listed on the back of the 1972 Chevelle brochure. His “research” must have consisted of asking his high school buddies if they’d ever seen one.
Looks like a $10K Malibu 2 barrel car & this guy wants more than double the value for a silver vinyl roof????
Based on the grille, if it is original, this is a 71 Malibu.
Yup, ‘71 grille and ‘72 turn signal lenses. Either way it’s not worth half of what he thinks it is…
I dont suppose the seller even thought that the vinyl top could have been replaced with a silver one when the car was repainted ?
Tip Top shape 19k not tip top shape I say 6500
I have a 05 ranger 80k everything works you give me 3k
