Rare Jurgen Camper: 1975 Volkswagen Bus

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Given the absolute insanity that surrounds Volkswagen Buses of the Type 2 variety, this rare Jurgen camper model should blow a few minds and make some buyers think the $93,000 asking price is downright reasonable. This conversion was done in-period, and while seemingly plenty of later bay window models got this treatment, the seller points out that this Bus camper conversion is exceedingly rare for being of the split window variety. The body is from a 1961 model, but it’s registered in Florida as a ’75. Built in South Africa, the camper shell addition looks to be cleanly integrated with a well-appointed cabin. Find it here on eBay with an asking price of $93,000.

The camper model was supposedly built by Volkswagen of South Africa, a part of the world that has produced more than one factory oddball that the rest of the country didn’t get. This style of camper was all the rage in the 1960s, and is quite popular today for anyone looking to complement a vintage truck build with a period accessory. The seller notes the Bus was restored at some point but he is unsure as to when. It still presents incredibly well if it is an older restoration, and like so many VW camper conversions, it’s incredibly well thought out. The camper features pop out windows, while the cab sports the desirable Safari-style pop-out windshield.

The interior is a treat, and the attention to detail is impressive. The bed linens matching the exterior color scheme may not seem significant in the grand scheme of things, but such a rare camper van deserves this sort of presentation. Like all VW campers authorized by the factory, the seller explains how the cabin is loaded with thoughtful storage spaces and a clever layout that makes the most of the limited amount of space. It features a double bed, along with “…fridge, stove, basin, mini bathroom, sink, cupboards, and also various storage space for towels, clothes, and kitchen utilities.”

The driver compartment is up the same level of detail as the rest of the camper, with nicely restored seats and door panels and perfect carpeting. The right hand drive steering will take some getting used to, but you’ll be going so slowly that it won’t be all that challenging to manage. The seller reports that the camper sports a 2.0L engine fitted with dual Solex carburetors and paired to a 4-speed transmission, and that new fuel lines and a gas tank have been installed. While this rare Jurgen conversion is achingly beautiful, I would be petrified to drive it to any of the actual campgrounds that one might consider spending a few nights at given the rarity of the Bus – not to mention the price of admission.

93K US? It’s different, and the 2 litre would make the scenery go past faster than the original 40 HP, but I’ve got better things to spend that kind of coin on.

I’m surprised a dealer in either the United Kingdom or Australia didn’t get their hands in it. Either if those two countries seems like a more natural fit due to it being a RHD.

They were known as Jurgens Auto Villa and our South African roads saw plenty of them. They were pretty slow but SA roads are not anywhere near as busy as US roads. By the way, S Africans drive on the LEFT side of the road.

Buy this and be the laughing stock at your next VW meet. $93k? MAYBE $9300 but even that’s a stretch.

Laughing stock at a VW meet? Pul-eese. This camper would be catapulted into a must-see at any VW gathering.

Your assessment that MAYBE $9300 is a stretch, is woefully low for something this nice. The seller is waiting for that one unicorn buyer that has to have it. A year later, he’ll probably drop the price to $85k then to a still pricey $75k firm!

I lived in South Africa for over 55 years and these Jurgens campers were everywhere. They weren’t a problem on the roads back then as there wasn’t the amount of traffic that we have today.

I lived in South Africa for over 55 years and these Jugens campers were everywhere. They weren’t too much of a problem back thenas the roads were very quiet in comparison to today’s roads.

This is cool. I have never seen one before, at least that I can remember. Way too pricey, though!

For that price I’d prefer a brand new proper motorhome with all the creature comforts, including luxury, horsepower, solar, generator, good looks, etc etc.

Everybody knows, or should know, you decide to go into the RV market, you simply can’t have a thin wallet. RV’s have become the attraction of the wealthy, and pretty much excludes most that would actually enjoy this. Okay, we also all know, on a rig like this, routes ( and weather, gusty winds will have you hanging on for dear life, and significant other with arms folded hounding you this was a bad purchase) have to be planned, I’d have to think you’d barely get the 45 minimum speed on interstates. Again and again, $100g’s, what are they thinking? Buyers remorse will be high on this one.

Yes you did!! I drove it up Hwy 1 from San Diego to Mendocino. And I did hit some wicked winds just before reaching Cambria… I wasn’t sure I would make it out of those mountains! Quite an adventure so far.
