READER AD: 1983 Zimmer Golden Spirit Coupe

If you are into unique and odd vehicles, look no further than Reader Robert D’s Zimmer Golden Spirit Coupe! This neo-classic luxury cruiser was the brainchild of Paul Zimmer as an attempt to recapture the grandeur and style of pre-war luxury cars, but with modern amenities and technology. Zimmer built 1,500 of these Golden Spirits and this one is number 593. It’s in fantastic condition and has covered just 11,424 miles. Robert has recently serviced the engine, but it could use some detailing to be in perfect condition. If you’d love to own this interesting piece of history, be sure to take a closer look at Robert’s ad via the link below!

To ensure that their cars were dependable and powerful enough to move all this weight around, Zimmer started with a brand new 1982 Ford Mustang. They used the chassis and drivetrain components, including the 5.0l V8 and automatic transmission. This should make finding mechanical parts incredibly simple and affordable.

From there, they built a custom fiberglass body, this one has some minor chips and a few checks, but it in nice shape overall. Since the car is about luxury, they equipped the interior with leather 6-way power Recaro seats, power everything, and a Nardi steering wheel. The rest of the interior is covered in matching leather with a woodgrain dash and door inserts. It’s far nicer than you would expect to find in something built by a small builder in the ’80s, but it looks like Zimmer pulled lots of components from other vehicles to ensure a nice finished product.

With a good detailing and polish, this Golden Spirit could look as good as new! It’s incredible that Zimmer managed to build and sell as many of these as they did, but they appear to have been well built and they really do make a statement. Robert is ready for this one to go to a good home, so make him an offer. And if you end up buying it, let us know what it’s like to hit the road in this machine!

Well, I think it is better looking then that darned Stutz that was here recently , but just barely. To own and drive one of these, a person would have to posses a rather large sense of humor, and a thick skin.

I think of these as seeing a two-headed snake in nature. I am attracted and repulsed at the same time….

Lets see, if buy this car I would need to find some snakeskin platform boots, maybe a purple, crushed velvet suit, fedora with tiger stripe hat band. Couple of Curtis Mayfield 8 track tapes. Should be easy enough. And then….Ooooh Superfly!

Every person that I have seen that has owned one of these all looked the same. It kind of makes you want to puke.

I saw one of these about three years ago while having coffee with a group of Geezers. Several of us had classic cars and so when this fellow drove up, parked and came in to the restaurant. He was invited to the table and asked questions about the car. These are not kit cars, they were manufactured and sold as a brand.

I lived by the zimmer plant in Pompano Bch. Florida and drove by often and remember seeing the Mustang front clips stacked along a fence, they were all black for some reason. Often wondered what they did with them.

I actually kind of like it. However, I would make these revisions: remove the horns and front bumper. I like the whitewalls but would change the rims. The rear end needs to be re-done: different bumper and different lights, and remove the leather straps. And the color. I think because of the neutral color it tends to make people feel neutral about it. I would go with classic white or black. Wish there were more pics of the interior, trunk and engine compartment.

I like it it has better lines then the Excalibur’s I’m not to crazy about the colour but it would be a lot of work to change it. I’d just repaint the fenders and running boards I’d go with forest green on navy blue. I’m not sure a get the hate that these receive. They are a bold attempt at something different. One thing is for sure you’d be the only person at the cars and coffee night that had one. Good luck to the new owner.

Have to agree with you, Jerry, definitely needs different taillights. Just not sure what. Since it is Ford based maybe 70s Lincoln Continental, or 58 Edsel station wagon taillights. Another option would be 70s Cadillac de Ville. Or 73 Imperial. Just not hodge podge round
