As classic car collector and fan back in 2015 I bought the legendary 1979 Mercedes 450SEL 6.9 ALL original 60K miles black exterior and tan leather interior approx 7K these built worldwide a good guess under 500 cars still on road today I paid $ 36K for it in 2015 Its very clean I had some issues with hydropneamatic suspension

Buyer beware. While I know nothing about the seller, and hopefully they are reputable, I was burned by both eBay and the seller (also from California) as the vehicle I purchased was grossly misrepresented. eBay told me they could do NOTHING and advised me to get hold of the California Sheriff’s Dept. (which I did) and file a complaint. My advice: Buy a plane ticket and see it physically.

That said, why, with only 58K miles on the clock, did the head gasket and front suspension require so much service? MB 126 cars are tanks and perhaps the best they’ve ever produced? I have owned several and even after 200K miles, my suspension was solid!

Good luck to the seller with the sale and if the car is as presented, it seems to be an excellent value.

I’ve bought Mercedes all over North America and better than an airplane ticket is a proper inspection by the local Mercedes dealer. They have a multi page form for their mechanic to follow and it has saved me from making a mistake several times. Not a 100% guaranteee but cheaper and better than me looking at the car personally – but then I’m not much of a mechanic.

I recently saw an ad for one with about 75k miles on it for about 1/2 the price so I can’t comment on the value of this one. Condition is a huge factor on these older Mercedes. Be sure to see maintenance records as many were neglected as they got older.

You are absolutely correct, Peter. I am not a certified mechanic, although some have commented I am “certifiable”. Excellent advice for all of us to heed regarding a proper inspection. It can not only save a lot of headaches, it can also be utilized as a negotiating tool to determine a vehicle’s proper value.
