Seller’s Description: This is a black plate California car, and its a rare & desirable 2 door with the 4 speed manual transmission. It has many performance upgrades including a larger B20 engine with dual carbs, tuned headers, dual exhaust, front and rear sway bars, additional gauges, air horns, etc. Original dark green car with tan interior. The car was running when parked 15 years ago. It needs a straightforward restoration but has huge potential. A fun project at a low buy-in price, and it would make a great “event” car.
Body Condition: The body is straight and complete with all trim intact. Bumpers and grill are nearly perfect. Good glass. The outer body has non-structural rust from sitting outside (corners of the doors, corners of the front fenders, one rear fender lip, etc.)
Mechanical Condition: The car has been parked for 15 years, so it will need service before attempting to start (fluids changed, plugs, points, carb cleaning, etc. The engine is free and turns over by hand. There are signs that it had been rebuilt prior to its long storage.

Why no title? Does it pre date that requirement in CA?
A title is always required in California. It would be wise for the buyer to have the seller accompany them to the DMV before handing over the payment.

If you read the ad…………the hard copy was simply lost…………he has the duplicate title paperwork signed and ready. That is all that is required. I have done many of them. You might be best to title it in California prior to transferring it to another state but within the state it is as good as a hard title. Great looking car at a super price.
I saw that. Making the sale conditional on them going to the DMV is meant to protect your interests. If for any reason an issue arises what incentive does the seller have to follow through in a timely manner?

I’m happy to go with the buyer to the DMV to get the registration transferred. I can even bring the car on my trailer if needed. Getting the title done is really not an issue-
That’s the stand up way of going about things. I’m probably a bit paranoid, I have several friends that have encountered problems while registering cars where the paperwork wasn’t quite in order.

My dad had a red one almost identical to this which is the car I learned to drive on. They are basically bulletproof as far as drivetrain goes. You can use and abuse them and they keep on running. I taught several girlfriends how to drive a manual transmission on his and nobody was able to do any damage!
If it was a little closer to me I would definitely consider picking up. It looks like it’s in very good condition and even if it has some engine issues they are quite easy to work on.
Located in the Montecito area. Was this car involved in the floods last year?
It wasn’t a flood, it was a mudslide and despite it messing up the freeway for a few weeks, it really only involved a small area of Montecito. I have a hunch that if this car had been involved in the mudslide, it would be a lot smaller than what you see here

Black California license plate is correct for the year and I’m guessing is the original one allocated to the car, when new. The lack of a title (a.k.a. Pink Slip) is surprising, but I am sure it could be sorted.

He filled out a DMV duplicate title form and it can be transferred legally. It has been off the DMV computer after being parked 15 years so there will be no back fees if it stays in California. The black plates can be retained if desired when the car is registered. Let me know if I can clear up any other issues.

The mudslide was horrific, and not far from us, but we’re at a higher altitude and were unaffected. I feel terrible for our neighbors that lost everything. It will take years to fully rebuild, and our town will never be quite the same after this tragedy-
I always wanted one of these. Back in the day…early seventies I had a friend that had the same year and model with a 4 speed and two doors in Volvo yellow . He spent a lot of time on his back under the front end on a concrete driveway. :)
This would be more work than I would want to take on but with sufficient funds and time this presents a decent opportunity for someone. Hope it finds a good home. GLWS!

Buddy of mine had one of these 122S models, he bought it from a guy who bought it from original owner, Jules Bergman, a newsman known for training with the NASA astronauts. It was in perfect condition, until he was rear ended by a Mercedes. The Volvo exhibited little damage and drove away, while the Mercedes had to be towed. How’s that for Swedish toughness?
I helped drive one from Orlando to Dallas around 1976. It was burning a little oil but easily cruised at 85, and pulled strongly even faster. If it wasn’t so far away, I would buy it. (Florida)
Lots of emails, but no serious buyers yet. I’m stumped! This seems like a cheap price for a car with this much potential, and these 2 doors bring good money when they are fixed up, so the buyer shouldn’t worry about being “upside down” on the project (as long as he/she is resourceful). At this price, I’d buy it myself if I didn’t already own it!
I currently own about 30+ classic cars and motorcycles – paying to store and maintain that many has become a real burden and I’m eager to liquidate a number of them to get the collection down to a more reasonable number.
I think you’re close Mark. I was able to drive my 67 coupe home a couple of months ago for $2,800 up in the Bay Area. Mine needs mechanical freshing as well as a fair bit of cosmetic freshing (paint), seats redone, dash pad redone, new windshield. I think I may of have a bit less rust, but I prefer your shade of green over my shade of white. That green and tan combo looks fantastic. GLWTS.
These were great cars, easily capable of 200,000 miles on the engine at a time when most American cars were considered ready for the scrapyard at half that. If you take a close look at the front, you can see the resemblance to the 1955 Chrysler 300. I owned one of these back in the mid 70’s, and it served me well. It got great gas mileage for the time – 27-30 mpg, and me with a heavy right foot….. I needed a truck, and was able to sell the Volvo to a guy who was happy to pay me more than $500 more than I had in it, after driving it for close to 3 years. The car had 163,700 on it when I sold it.
Main difference was that mine was a 4 door.
I owned quite a few, 2&4 door and wagon. Look for hidden damage under inner fender starting at the firewall. They tend to crack. I welded up a few. Otherwise these are great cars. A junkyard engine would be cheap and quick, but this one should be able to get running with little work.
I love these 122’s. The price is reasonable. I learned to drive in a 65 Amazon that my dad and I restored. Two months after the restoration some drunk woman rear ended me in a 68 Chevy. We found a rear clip and welded that on and had it painted to match. 6 months later my dad got rear ended by a 79 malibu. We beat out the dent and kept on driving. My dad was not happy. If you can master tuning the duel SU carbs then you can have a great time driving it. The engines are easy to rebuild if that is required. Although this one has a B-20 instead of the original B-18. It looks as though it had some period upgrades to make it a lil more sporty. Wish I had the room to take this on.
