Reader’s Choice: Wagon Wednesday

1959-edsel-station-wagon

After having a hard time finding a wagon to write up for today, I decided to employ the help of our readers by asking for suggestions. Well, they bombarded our fb wall with cars from all over the internet, so I have decided to mention a few of what they found and let you guys sort out the best deals. First off is this 1959 Edsel Station Wagon in Maine. Take a look at the listing here.

1969-buick-skylark-wagon

Next, we have this 1969 Buick Skylark wagon from the San Francisco bay area. The seller claims that it is unrestored and that it currently runs and drives fine. Price seems high and we think they must agree because of their statement at the end of the ad, “if you have not driven the car you cannot judge the value”.

1954-Studebaker-Conestoga-wagon

Maybe this 1954 Studebaker Conestoga is the one to get? Two doors and a V8 seem like a good combination to us. The car is in Ohio, but they claim it came from Washington. Seems like a lot of rust for a Pacific Northwest car? We like the “not for sale” lettering scribbled on the window. They must have had a lot of interested parties at sometime. Now lets see if they can move it on craigslist.

1966-dodge-coronet-wagon

Finally, we have this 1966 Dodge Coronet wagon up in northern Idaho. It is the cheapest of the bunch ($800) and is claimed to be running and drivable. We just wonder what lurks under the hood. So, after looking at each ad, which wagon would you spring for and why? Or can you find something better? Please post your links below in the comments section.

We want to thank all those who submitted their finds. Please keep ’em coming!

I’d nab the 66 Dodge…perfect project to replicate a support vehicle for drag racing!

Fail. The Studebaker Wagonaire R2 (roll up roof, supercharged, 4 speed) is the coolest wagon out there. I don’t have one – I have a ’91 Custom Cruiser – but the Stude is the top cool wagon – no contest.

I’ve got to side with the Edsel. A rare bird with an increasing popularity. Unfortunately my better half doesn’t like wagons. PERIOD! So I’ll just have to admire them secretly…

With only one crappy pic, I’d call the Edsel owner if I was really in the game – it -COULD- be the two-door villager wagon which would be cool. Otherwise…I think I’d pass – the Stude would be my next choice but it would be a bit of work to make it nice again. And as far as that Buick goes, NO I do NOT have to drive it…the dented front fender speaks volumes about how the car has been cared for.

I own the Buick…those are geriatric bumps…not misuse. The interior is bikini friendly….a proven fact. At least out of all the post…it runs and drives very nice, no squeaks , no rattles, no clunks….breaks straight….even has original heater hoses and exhaust DOES NOT need window felts and door rubbers, the heater core has not leaked and rotted the floor. …..yeah its speaks volumes….I showed the bad up front.

Sorry, never made a 2 door Villager, they had a 2 dr Roundup in 58, no 2 drs in 59 or 60.

Unfortunately you could not have picked four more boring wagons if your life depended on it!
Seriously, where did you get your automotive taste. You must have grown up in the 70’s, but that is still no excuse. Okay, the Edsel and the studebaker may have some intrinsic value form being orphan marques, but a 1969 Buick wagon? Or a 1966 Plymouth wagon (even though it too is now an orphan)? Come on guys, have you run out of interesting cars to write about? Check out these wagons: http://www.facebook.com/thelongroofpage

I prefer the Buick Skylark. Ask the man who owns one!

I’d go for the Buick. It would make a nice companion to my ’69 Skylark.
That way we’d be able to take it camping.

And EDIT to my last post – the Villager is the 4-dr wagon. Edsel’s 2-dr wagon was the Roundup!!

When I was a kid a few people on the block had Olds “Vista Cruisers” 69-72′ they were a fav and also interesting is A small number of 1972 Vista Cruisers were modified by Hurst Performance, then based in Warminster Township, Pennsylvania for support car duties at the 1972 Indianapolis 500 and equipped with 455 cubic-inch Rocket V8s along with the official pace car, a 1972 Hurst/Olds, also powered by a 455 V8. Two are known to survive as of 2012, a press car and a medical director’s car. As of 2012, the medical director’s car is owned by a relative of Ray Harroun, the winner of the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911.

    Charles G, lighten up!
remember some of us like cars that you don’t just as you like some cars that we don’t.
the size of the front door makes the Edsel look liike a 4-door to me, but I agree that if you’re selling a $5,000 car you gotta do better than that with photos!
I want to find a nice ’59 Chevy wagon for my wife, she LOVES 59s.
    6 cylinder stick w/OD please and bonus points if it’s a 2-door……….

      chris in wnc,

Whereabouts are you looking and running or a project chevy wagon. I’m from the inland northwest and spotted a few older chevys in the area.

Is it too much to ask that “running, driving cars” be driven out of the weeds they’ve been festering in, to prove that point?

And maybe remove the ‘not for sale’ signs once you decide you need some cash. Just gives the impression that the car lost many good years and potential buyers while you were being ornery about not fixing it up.

I’m with those who would go with the Edsel. I’m not an Edsel expert or owner, but I like the unusual and, of course, the 1950s. That’s a car you won’t see too many of, so even at a 500-car Show N’Shine your ’59 Edsel wagon will probably be the only one there. Plus, I like the 2-tone paint, the chrome, the S-P-A-C-E inside….what’s not to like??

We need more wagons, so I’m for celebrating them every Wednesday. Wagons are the most useful and practical vehicles you can own. They’re up there with crew cab pickups, but can be more economical to buy and run, and almosty as useful. My family has both a wagon and a crew cab pickup right now, and the wagon gets the most use….and the best gas mileage. Let’s keep celebrating wagons. Onward, wagon wednesday!

I WONT BUY ANYTHING THAT HAS BEEN SITTING IN A FIELD. I BOUGHT A 64 LINCOLN THAT WHEN I PICKED UP A RAG IN THE TRUNK A BLACK SNAKE CRAWLED INTO THE CAR. THE OWNER CALLED ME SIX MONTHS LATER AND SAID HE HAD THE CAR ON BLOCKS.ON THE WAY HOME THE REAR WINDOWS STARTED GOING UP AND DOWN AND THE WIPERS WENT ON AND OFF.THINKING THAT THE SNAKE OWNED THE CAR AND I SOLD IT FAST.RIGHT AFTER SELLING IT I SAID DUH VACUMN CONTROLLED.STILL PISSED ABOUT THAT ONE.

Buick had the Sportwagon, Olds had the Vista Cruiser. My dream wagon is a ’67 Skylark Sportwagon, 2-tone green….and I have the money for one when it turns up!
