Ready For The Road! 1987 Toyota SR5 Xtracab

Will Toyota trucks ever not be hot? It sure doesn’t seem like it will come to past, as 1980s pickups continue to command a good price seemingly regardless of options or configuration. Here’s another one, a 1987 Toyota Xtracab 4×4 Pickup SR5 powered by the standard-issue 2.4-liter 22RE with 264,500 miles and listed for $17,000 or best offer. That’s just nuts, when you think about it, as few vintage cars could show up with that sort of mileage and not be laughed out of existence. Still, people buy them all the time, and while it may not sell for $17K, I’m sure the seller will get close enough to pull the trigger. Find it here on eBay and located in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Toyota benefits from a mild restoration of sorts, with the seller carrying out all sorts of mechanical improvements. What’s less obvious is whether the paint is original. The seller refers to the truck as “…originally finished in Medium Blue (8A1),” which reads like the current paint isn’t original. But no mention is made of a respray, and the decals all appear to be in the right place, so is there a chance a truck with close to 300,000 miles could still look this good? It’s hard to say, but it did spend most of its life in Oregon, where vintage vehicles seem to survive in better shape than the rest of the country.

The interior is bare-bones Toyota goodness, with blue cloth to match the blue exterior. Most of these were manual transmission-equipped, so no surprise to see a stick-shift here. The matching blue dash cover is period-correct and a bit out of style now, but it also is an indication that previous owners saw this Toyota as more than just an old workhorse. The seller notes the air conditioning has been converted to R134A and blows cold, and that the windows are lightly tinted. Despite the cover, there are some cracks in the dash, but they’re described as being minor in size. The carpets look quite clean as well.

The engine is where the bulk of the “restoration” work has occurred, with the seller providing a lengthy list of improvements. Highlights include a new radiator, new shock absorbers, numerous suspension components, brake rotors and pads, exhaust system, all vital fluids changed, and more. Just in the past 1,000 miles, the seller replaced the transmission input seal, output seal, differential pinion seals, hub gaskets, and axle seals, along with greasing the bearings and servicing the lock-out hubs. The miles are high but this truck has been loved; still, I can’t see the asking price happening. What do you think it will sell for?

Vintage as they may be, $17,000 is far fetched.
It is a good looking truck though.

Too much oil underneath , I’m guessing front main seal or both front and rear are need of replacement. Plus under engine pictures with the plastic cover off would be nice. Was there an mention of timing chain and guides being replaced ?

The underbody suggests maybe it’s been treated with some kind of Waxoyl-type rust preventative. These trucks did really well in snow, but unfortunately those that were used in the snow belt succumbed rapidly to rust.

First things first, nice looking truck.
    Tacoma, no.
The Tacoma model was introduced in 1995.
    This is a Gen5 “Hilux”.

To sparkster, that’s not oil underneath the truck.
    It’s fresh undercoat.
Popular in areas where they salt the roads in the winter.
And there’s no plastic cover on the motor or under the motor. Period.
If you’re referring to the skid plate under the front of the motor, it’s metal and there to protect the motor from rocks and brush. 4X4 kind of stuff.

It’s got the wrong wheels, those came off of a Gen6 Hilux or Gen1 Tacoma.

Interior wise, the seats and console are out of a Gen6 Hilux or Tacoma. Door panels and dash look to be original.

$17k is optimistic, especially with 300k miles.
I hope he gets it, makes mine worth more.
