Ready to Drive: 1974 Chevrolet Malibu Classic

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

For 1974, the Malibu Classic became the range-topping vehicle in the Chevelle range. This particular Classic is a nice looking car that you will find listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Greenville, South Carolina, it is offered with a clear title. The seller has set a BIN price of $8,990 but the option is also available to make an offer.

This Classic looks to be in very nice condition. The seller states that the car is not perfect, but it is in good condition for its age. Certainly, the supplied photos don’t seem to indicate any major issues. I think that the Rally Wheels set off nicely on the car, and they add an air of class to an already nice looking car. The seller states that the odometer indicates that the car has covered 18,965 miles, and while he believes that this may be correct, he has no way of verifying it.

The interior of the Classic also presents well, and there are no obvious issues to note. There may be some minor fading in the carpet, but it looks to be so slight that it probably isn’t an problem. The interior comes loaded with some nice creature comforts that include a tilt wheel, air conditioning, power windows and a power seat.

Checking the VIN confirms that this Classic is fitted with the 400ci engine, which is backed by an automatic transmission. The seller states that the car runs and drives well. The car also has power steering and power brakes. Under the hood looks quite clean and tidy, and there doesn’t appear to be any major issues or concerns here.

This 1974 Malibu Classic is a car that you could purchase and use immediately. It presents well and appears to be a clean and honest survivor. Finding an original one in this condition is getting quite difficult, and the fact that it sports a 400ci engine rather than the 350 makes it more desirable. With prices for decent 350-engined cars starting at around $9,500, this particular Classic may represent a pretty reasonable buy.

Dream ride? Maybe not if you’re a muscle snob. But a classic that you can get in and drive right now? Pretty much.

Nice clean looking car. These things all turned to Swiss cheese up here in the rust belt. We don’t see ’em like this around here.
I think that 400 was actually a Pontiac engine. That time period saw a lot of factory sharing of power plants between brands.

It’s a 400 Chevy small block, not a Pontiac mill.

We had a ’74 Malibu as a kid, 400 small block, console shift, swivel bucket seats. Nice car, good size, pulled strong. Like most cars, we wore it out and threw it away.

Great body style, super clean, low miles, (looks legit from the pics)makes this Chevy a great deal. I love the tail lights, and you could leave it stock or make it a hot rod. I had a ’73 Caprice with a 400 , and it was a very strong running motor. Personally, I would clean it up well, put on a nice exhaust system, (and a 4 barrel carb., this may have a 2 barrel) and ENJOY ! Good luck to the new owner

That engine is a small block Chevrolet ,not a Pontiac. What a clean car.

I’m looking at the grill, and it seems like it’s a 75? I could be wrong though

I believe the 75 grille has vertical bars vs. the horizontal ones on the 74 grille.

This is a very clean car and nicely optioned, I think it’s a great buy at that price, unless it’s a bondo-box. My uncle had one of these, a 4 door with the 350. It was comfortable and powerful, I’d love this coupe for myself. Oh well….let’s hope it finds a good home and isn’t rigged into yet another ridiculous hot rod. Come to think of it, a relative inherited a 73 Malibu coupe that he rigged into a ridiculous hot rod, it was a shame. It was all original, 350 with 2 bbl and AC, really nice shape. He left water in the radiator, froze and cracked the block, then put an underpowered 305 in it. I don’t even want to know what happened to it after that. Just stupid, should’ve left it alone.

My drivers ed car…If you couldn’t afford a Monte Carlo, this was the next best thing…nice driving cars, and I think that 400 puts out 150 hp!

wouldn’t take to much modification to pull some decent horsepower out of that small block 400! Nicely equipped nice car!

Nice car you can drive every day. 1974 means you don’t have to smog in CA so you could squeeze more power and mileage out of it.

My Dad had one of these white on green with a black vinyl top, although the vinyl top on these types of cars, may not last very long.Someone had already removed the half vinyl top on the car my Dad had, possibly, because of this reason. So l see a car with white on black, with black half vinyl roof, and 400 chevy V8,although l thought most of these car’s we’re 350 chevy V8.l could be wrong but I thought only the nascar editions, as well as the Laguna’s,had the bigger motor’s. Anyways good clean low mileage car 10-15k,no way $1500.00- $5000.00,on a very good car auction day.
