General Motors was a formidable player in the 1960s muscle car movement, including this SS 396 by Chevrolet. Based on a Malibu sport coupe (and convertible), the SS 396 is one of the most often cloned Detroit hot rods more than 50 years later. This 1969 edition is said to be the “real deal” and is numbers matching, at least it pertains to the transmission. The engine is long gone, so you’ll have to provide your own as part of the restoration process. When the Chevelle was launched in 1964, the SS 396 was an option package. It became a series of its own in 1966-68 as the popularity of muscle cars grew and reverted to option status through 1972. Even as an option (RPO Z25), the SS 396 was a big seller. In 1969, 86,300 of the 367,100 Malibu’s built that year were so equipped. Though it’s hard to tell now by its condition, the seller’s SS 396 was finished in Dark Dusk Blue paint with a White Parchment interior and bucket seats.

We’re told this Chevy was stored in a barn for several years and has become one too many projects on the seller’s plate. It’s going to need bodywork, but some replacement panels are being supplied by the seller. The frame and the rest of its “bones” are supposedly good; however, the floor pans have some holes and will need patching or replacing. The seller says the car is complete – except for the engine.

The car’s original TH-400 automatic transmission is still in play as is the factory 12-bolt rear end. The power steering and brakes have also survived, although parts like these must be in the trunk or the passenger compartment. The interior is said to be all there, but the seats alone look rough. We’re told the car looks worse than it is, but it’s going to set you back $30,000 just to acquire the project and install a crate motor, much less dealing with anything cosmetic.
