Sometimes, being short on details in a craigslist listing isn’t the crime we think it is. It all depends on the information presented, and in the case of this Porsche 928, I suspect the seller is the kind of guy you want to buy from even with the brevity of the description. Porsche’s ultimate grand tourer remains a bit of an underappreciated classic at the moment, and for $12,000, a clean example like this one listed here on craigslist appears to be a solid buy. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Tony Primo for the find.
The seller notes he is the second owner and that there’s just under 150,000 miles on the clock. As a coupe built for gobbling up highway miles, the automatic transmission is a near-standard feature. While many of us prefer to find a car with three pedals, the slushbox isn’t the penalty that it might be in other models. The torque of the V8 makes up for not being able to row your own gears, so you’ll still enjoy respectable performance times and passing ability with two pedals. The interior appears to be in excellent condition, with a crack-free dash and a factory radio still installed in the center stack.
The styling of the 928 remains quite distinctive to this day. It’s space age, almost, especially when you view it from behind. The large rear window in the hatch and the angled tail light panels remained a constant in the 928’s evolution, which was sold until the early 90s. The older 928s are still quite affordable, but that all changes when you get to the final few years of production. The final model years featured the 928 GTS, which has been a six-figure car for some time. While the updated styling is quite attractive and the addition of the Cup-style wheels make it even more of a looker, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with keeping $50K in your bank account and going for an 80s model like this.
The bucket seats are in great shape, like the rest of the interior. Now, back to the brevity of the listing: the seller simply says that it is all original and can be driven daily. In addition, he highlights the fact that the 928 is fully serviced and that the must-do timing belt job has already been done. To me, the seller conveys that he knows what’s important here, and that most enthusiasts will place a great deal of value on the two-owner history and any claim that a classic is reliable enough to daily drive. This 928 is worthy of a closer look, especially with the reasonable asking price and impressive cosmetic condition.
While it’s a nice looking car for sure, it’s right at the age and mileage territory of being a nickel and dimer.. If you’re handy with tools this could be the car for you but if you’d rather take it to the shop, you’ll probably get to know your mechanic well.
I didn’t know Porsche was barely one step ahead of GM in the cheap interior plastic sweepstakes.
