Rebuilt 400 + a 5-Speed: 1967 Pontiac GTO

It is sometimes difficult to judge whether a classic has hit a sweet spot with potential buyers, but this 1967 Pontiac GTO leaves no room for such doubts. It has generated considerable interest since hitting the market, which is understandable. Its presentation is first-rate, the seller treated its engine to a rebuild, and the upgraded transmission will provide longer legs for effortless open road cruising. The seller has listed the GTO here on eBay in Baldwin, Wisconsin. Bidding has raced past the reserve to $34,100, meaning that a new home is only days away for this beauty.

It would be fair to say that the GTO came of age in 1967. Pontiac granted it standalone model status the previous year, and although sales volumes had dropped slightly when compared to 1966 as potential buyers anticipated a new model for 1968, there were still 81,722 buyers who were prepared to take one home. This final-year example looks stunning in Tyrol Blue. The seller doesn’t mention any restoration work beyond an interior retrim, but the shining paint and lack of visible imperfections seem to suggest it has received at least some TLC. The panels are as straight as an arrow, and there is no evidence of rust. The visual impact is heightened by the spotless trim and the Rally 1 wheels that are wrapped in Redline tires.

One of the most profound changes made by Pontiac to the 1967 GTO was an increase in the engine capacity. All GTOs to this point had featured a 389ci V8, but the company stretched this to 400ci. It discontinued the Tri-Power option, which some potential buyers lamented. However, with that year’s Sales Brochure quoting power and torque figures of 335hp and 441 ft/lbs, there was no questioning the vehicle’s muscle car credentials. It is disappointing that the seller supplies no engine bay images, and doesn’t confirm whether the 400ci V8 hiding under the hood is numbers-matching. They do say that the motor is freshly rebuilt, with this GTO also featuring a five-speed Tremec transmission, a 3.55 Posi rear end from a Chevelle, power steering, and an upgraded aluminum radiator to control temperatures. The Pontiac’s mechanical health isn’t stated, but I would expect a GTO of this caliber to run and drive well.

The seller leaves no doubt about this GTO’s interior, confirming that it received a retrim in Blue vinyl. Aftermarket additions include air conditioning, a Dakota gauge cluster, cruise control, and a Hurst shifter for the five-speed. These changes complement the factory tilt wheel and the AM/FM radio. Faulting the presentation is seemingly impossible, with the lack of wear suggesting that the Pontiac hasn’t seen much action since the retrim. It is another aspect of this classic that is sure to receive praise wherever it goes.

The Listing View tally for this 1967 Pontiac GTO has raced past 260 in the past day, with twenty-nine people adding the car to their Watch List. This has only equated to five bids at the time of writing, but the indications are that some people might simply be testing the water at this point.     A really nice looking GTO, and with a 5 speed, so it won’t have any problem with modern traffic. But why no views under the hood or under the car?

    This sure has a lot going for it for someone wanting to drive and enjoy it like it deserves. Great color combo. I would guess the blue interior is not all that common, not rare, but it seems most of the Tyrol Blue cars seem to have black interiors. The 5 speed is a big upgrade if you want to drive the car especially for some highway use. Wood wheel, tilt etc – nice! The seller could have helped himself probably with more details.
