Recent Restoration: 1967 Ford Mustang Inline-6

Ford introduced the Mustang mid-way through 1964 and in the next two-and-a-half years would sell more than 1.2 million copies. So, saying that the new pony car was a huge success would almost be an understatement. The automobile received its first styling refresh in 1967 but still looked like a Mustang. This example is said to have been recently restored and it’s ready for a new home with an inline-6 and 3-on-the-floor. This nice but basic Mustang is in Dallas, Texas, and is available here on eBay where the bidding has reached $7,900 but there’s still a reserve in play.

Ford almost had the “pony car” to itself until 1967 (except for the Plymouth Barracuda). But with the advent of the Chevy Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, and Mercury Cougar, it was only natural that the Mustang would give up some market share. Sales of the ’67 Mustang were down by more than 20% but still twice those of its nearest competitor. Besides some physical changes which made for a slightly bigger car, the engine compartment was of sufficient size now to accommodate a big-block V8 engine.

When this Mustang was ordered new, few boxes were checked on the options list. It has the standard 200 cubic inch six-banger that was rated at 120 hp. Other than a radio and full-size wheel covers, perhaps little else was requested. At 72,000 miles, the Ford runs and drives well, and we assume the drivetrain was rebuilt as part of the recent restoration.

The Lime Gold (we think) repaint shines up nicely and no mention is made of any rust that had to be dealt with. The black vinyl interior looks sharp and inviting. A new set of tires resides at all four corners, so it looks like this car is ready to be driven anywhere, at least to Cars & Coffee on the weekends. While many buyers block to those V8 Mustangs, what’s not love about a more pedestrian auto like this?

    Hope its left as is. I’m not the first to say this: sometimes these plain jane original cars seem to get more attention than their highly modified brethren. And if would be easy and economical to drive and maintain. Having said that, someone will probably do some crazy restomod conversion

    I wish more cars were restored just like this. It brings back such nice memories. Almost all of us had and used common sense back in those days, and our engine choices reflected it.

    Bought a ‘66 with the I-6 3 spd-replete with Cherry Bombs and split exhaust at the manifold. Rigged up a wiper windshield squirter motor and bag to squirt onto the rear tires with a switch. Filled the bag with bleach to do burnouts.
    That car in the hands of a goofy 17 year old was a testament to the strength of the older Fords of the day..

    You could also get the 6 cylinder car with a 4-speed, at least in “65. My friend had one, that car was a lot of fun to drive! Were they offered in ’67? Can’t say.

    I had one like this as my first car, back in 73, darker green, a 68, same 6 cyl. and stick. black interior, went everywhere with it. Sold it 10 years later for more than I paid, and they wern’t even collectors cars then yet.

    The obvious question is why? Why pump cash into the least desirable ’67? The owner must have had an emotional attachment to this model.

      Isn’t that the very best reason to restore a car? If we had more like that, this would be a better, and more pure hobby. To restore with dollar signs in your eyes is not illegal, but it isn’t nearly as good as this man’s reason was.
