Redeye Hellcat Swapped: 2001 Dodge Viper RT-10

A Dodge Viper is practically synonymous with a V10 powerplant under the hood. Not only is this the engine configuration it was originally born with, but it also just fits the car’s raucous personality to a T. That being said, even an incredibly quick muscle car like Viper RT/10 can be improved upon with enough money, time, and skill, so this one actually has a Hellcat Redline V8 under the hood. Out of the box, that engine is good for close to 800 horsepower; with a upgraded pulley and injectors, it now makes closer to 850 b.h.p. The Viper is not street legal and is listed here on eBay with bids to $47,600 and no reserve.

Eagle-eyed readers will recognize the Viper from Hoonigan’s “This Vs. That” segment, which pitted the Hellcat-swapped Viper against a 2016 Viper GTC running nitrous. In three head-to-head challenges, the Hellcat Viper took two victories against the also-scary-fast GTC. The upgrades, of course, do not stop at just the engine, which is paired to a  T56 Magnum manual transmission. The Viper was built on the throtl YouTube channel and is now offered by Hoonigan, which if you don’t know, is a pretty ridiculous producer of motorsports content that breaks pretty much every boundary of high-performance builds and driving stunts.

While those of us of a certain age associate Hoonigan with Ken Block and his series of off-the-wall builds featuring Subarus and a wide range of cars converted to use on his epic “Gymkhana” shoots, the brand goes quite a bit further than that. There’s a healthy obsession with bending every norm possible as it relates to the capabilities of a given automobile, which is why it should come as no surprise that it was drawn to the ridiculousness of boosting the output of a car already known for prodigious levels of output. The Hellcat-swapped Viper is believed to represent the first time this engine has been swapped into a Viper, and given the performance documented in the YouTube drag race, we’re sure other Viper owners are chomping at the bit to perform the conversion.

The list of additional reinforcements and upgrades is quite long and available for perusal in the listing. Some of the goodies include Magnaflow custom headers and exhaust system; Wilwood rear brake setup; American Racing two-piece forged wheels; Penske Racing coilovers; and the aforementioned DW 1500 CC injectors and Metco Motorsports 2.75″ upper pulley. The temptation to take an already fast car and make it significantly faster is one that almost every gearhead can relate to; the realization of that dream with an actual running car that meets those fantasies is reserved for the select few. The current bid price seems like a bargain for a drag car that will be tough to take down on most any local drag strip.

As a owner of a Gen 1 Viper I would much rather have any Hemi in the car rather than the horrible sounding V10.

Fellow Viper guy here. I agree stock Vipers sound a little underwhelming however a heads/cam/exhaust upgrade makes a big difference. Or even just an exhaust upgrade to remove the factory restrictions of the cats and resonators with a high flow muffler.

All those mods listed and they do not have a decent engine photo posted.

I’m a big fan of all things automotive. But, NOTHING in all the world would part me from my beautiful ’17 GTC V10.
