Restomod: 1962 Ford F-100 Unibody

Looking and sounding like it came directly from a tv reality show, you know the ones, where they totally rebuild, restomod, or restore a vehicle in three days BECAUSE OF THE TIGHT DEADLINE!!!! This 1962 Ford F-100 Unibody is one cool-looking ride. The seller has it listed here on eBay in Bowling Green, Kentucky, there is no reserve, and the current bid is $5,800.

I’ve had a thing for Ford’s Unibody, or “integrated-body” trucks for decades and I have yet to own one. It’s one of those hanging fruit vehicles that just keep hanging out there but I never pick it. One of these days… The ’62 F-series trucks saw the FORD letters move out of the grille to just above it, and it would hang out there for two decades.

Ford’s fourth-generation F-series pickups were made between 1961 and 1966 and between 1961 and 1963, the coolest version was on tap for buyers who were looking for something very different: the integrated-body pickups. This is the short bed version but a longer model was available. Most of us know them as the Unibody pickup, and this one reportedly has a history of living in California and Arizona, which can be great as far as keeping rust away. This one, however, does have a few spots that will need work, and you can see the missing paint, giving it the patina look that a lot of folks like, especially when it comes to a restomod.

The interior looks great, with clearly a new vinyl seat cover, nice carpet (that may or may not need to be cleaned), and some aging around the gauges and other areas that don’t bother me one bit. I would probably get everything sorted mechanically and leave everything else for a while. I think a nice paint job would be great on such a nice truck, though. The bed certainly needs some help. The seller bangs out a grand slam with a great description and I’m tearing up looking at over 130 fantastic photos here. I vote for having this seller write every single vehicle ad from this point forward.

The engine is Ford’s 223-cu.in. inline-six, according to the VIN, and it would have had 135 horsepower. The seller had plans to lose it in favor of a Fox Body Mustang 5.0 V8 and five-speed, which I can’t argue with. This one is currently driving a bit rough due to what they say may be clutch adjustment issues. This truck has “Jaguar suspension, disc brakes, and rack and pinion steering” from a previous owner, so… wow! It’s well on its way to being a reality show-worthy Unibody. Any thoughts on this one?

      Messed up, I think, after 52 years of doing suspension and frame repairs & straightening that is not a choice to go with. If you got to have independent go with Explorer much easier to get factory, aftermarket & used parts. 42 of those years I had my own business & everything was old school, Bear pit rack, magnetic hub gauge, hand held wheel gauge, toe in stick & a tape measure don’t lie when doing frame straightening. Still got most equipment and tools, retired in 2018.

        I totally agree with the explorer third member comment, it is sturdy and parts availability will be steady for decades to come , it is sadly totally overlooked

    I was so disappointed when I got under the hood. Might like it with a Fatman Fabricators suspension, AC and a new 3.5 ford twin turbo v6 and new automatic transmission.

      NO ONE would like it with that garbage ecoboost. Terrible fuel economy, horrid to work on and don’t let the turbos go out because you followed the insane oil change intervals, didn’t use synthetic oil or do the “cool down” idle before shutting it off.
      But, an ALL brand new set up and only driving it a few thousand miles a year, you might like the garbage ecoboost.

        Uh oh! When should I start worrying about the “cool down” idle procedure on my EcoBoost? And I guess the 35 mpg could be better. But, with 90,000 on mine, I guess I’m stuck with this “lemon!” Please….

    A good start, but restomod would imply that it had at least a V8 upgrade. A warmed up 302 or 351 with powers front disc brakes or something besides just newer rims. Still like it.

    I have seen these trucks put on a late model chassis, such as a Ford LTD. When its done right it makes an assume truck.

    About 25 years ago I used to see a unibody Ford and with an old camper sitting in one place for ages. I always wanted to get it and fix it my way. That would have been with a 390 and who knows what else. Of course no green, ability or a place to work on it. I hope someone saved it.

    That six cylinder engine is either the 240 or the 300. The 215, 223 and 262 had the manifolds on the opposite side. The distributor and fuel pump would also be reversed. Not only that, the 240 and 300 (and the 262) don’t have two studs and nuts to hold the valve cover like the 215 and 223.

      Patrick, the first paragraph has a “here on eBay” highlighted in red, that’s what you’d click on to go to the auction and place your bid. This one sold for $9,005, though.
