Tribute cars can be somewhat contentious among certain groups such as collectors who prize originality, but I think this 1972 Plymouth Satellite – Road Runner Tribute car looks great. I mean, how can this classic 1970s green color on a 1970s Plymouth not look great? The seller has this one posted here on craigslist in Montpelier, Vermont and they’re asking $17,500. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Tony P. for the tip!
I believe this is Amber Sherwood Metallic and it’s one of two classic 1970s green Mopar colors I’d want on a Satellite, or even on a Road Runner tribute car. Heck, I’d like this car if it had four doors. It appears to be a base model Plymouth Satellite, evidenced by a lack of exterior “bright” trim. It’s a very crisp and clean look. It’s nice that the owner, or former owner, or whoever did the work on this car, didn’t give it an over-the-top Road Runner graphics treatment, but that’s just me. The wheels and tires are spot on, in my opinion and the seller’s list of work that’s been done is extensive, please read the craigslist ad for the scoop.
This car looks really nice. The seller says it was originally a Mississippi car and it’s a “rust-free body and underside” as well as the trunk; although we don’t see photos of any of those areas, unfortunately. They do show a few detailed photos and it looks rock solid. I’m assuming this car has been repainted although they don’t mention that in their mostly ALL-CAPS listing that I can see. It’s more of a base Satellite Coupe than Road Runner, at least exterior-wise. Hagerty is at $16,100 for a #2 excellent Satellite and $28,900 for a Road Runner.
The interior has been redone, as well as having a new windshield. This isn’t a hairy-chest four-on-the-floor, it’s a 904 automatic with a column selector, perfect for a Satellite but maybe not for a Road Runner tribute. it looks basically like new inside other than some light wear to the silver-painted trim around the dashboard area. A knowledgeable reader here on Barn Finds told me to use a silver marker/pen to touch that up on my little Dodge pickup and I have yet to try it, but I think it would work great here.
The engine looks spotless and is apparently a 340-cu.in. OHV V8, which if this was an actual Road Runner would have had 240 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. We don’t know what upgrades this one has other than dress-up parts but it sure looks great and I’m sure will spin the rear tires appropriately. The level of work done on this car, even the underside of the hood, tells me that the seller’s asking price isn’t that bad, what do you think?
Cool Mopar. Column shift Torq-flite, lively 3.55 rear end w Sure-Grip. And who doesn’t love a 340. 🙌 Nice.
I was never crazy about this style. To this day I stay true to that.. Some like it but not my cup of tea…
My fourth-grade teacher, Mr. Makela, had a red one and he still owns it today in his mid-80s. It’s more about the memories for me with old vehicles than anything.
Get rid of any of the “tribute” nonsense and you’d have a pretty nice Satellite.
Ditch the louvers on the back glass and the “Tribute” garbage. Add a set of Mopar Rallye wheels. Nice Car overall. GLWTA
I was thinking the same thing . I’d rather have a Stock Satellite then a fake Road Runner – and put a 340 in and leave the 904 ? at least put a 727 where it belongs, behind a 340 !
Very nice car! I would get rid of that aftermarket air cleaner.
You are right, it’s a nice car for the money. There’s a reason it sold quickly.

nobody mentioned the a/c missing?
I guess it is sold, the post is deleted. I agree with the above – it is a Satellite, and there is no shame in that. I owned one of these as a teenager, started as a 225-A230 3-on-the-tree stripper the same color. Not even a day/night mirror. By the time I was done it had every option except a floor console, 360-4sp-posi, PDB, PS, PW, AC, CC, buckets, rallye dash, the works – even a rear defroster (ah, to have time like a teenager again!!). And of course it was black. I drove that car back and forth between Pittsburgh and Boston more times that I can count. If I got this one, I would add a rallye dash, cruise, and buckets and console, take the louvers off, and run the wheels off of it. These were great cars; I liked the details on the 71’s better.
I will freely admit that I am not fond of this body style, (not a big Mopar guy anyway) but that being said, this is a pretty neat car. I agree with a couple of other comments, lose the shades and drop the “tribute” moniker and this would be a nice little cruiser.
“She drove a Plymouth Satellite, faster than the speed of light”.
