Rocky Mountain High: 1983 Jeep Scrambler

scrambler1

This 1983 Jeep CJ8 Scrambler here on eBay may look quite rough, but according to the seller it is almost rust-free and ripe for restoration. The mountain air must have played a role in keeping this outdoor-friendly 4×4 from the dangers of widespread corrosion, but that may not be reason enough to justify the near $10,000 Buy-It-Now price.

The interior appears to have fared better than the outside, though that isn’t saying much. Still, the door cards look presentable as does the driver’s seat bottom. I see no obvious deviations from the Jeep’s original condition (aside from the cosmetics), but most of the modifications on Jeeps of any era happen beneath the surface. However, the seller says it remains stock.

With over 200,000 miles on the clock, this Scrambler is proving the longevity of the classic Jeep inline six. How many more miles does it have left to give? Hard to tell, but if the mechanical systems have been maintained better than the cosmetics, we’re at least off to a good start.

The special edition Jeep models do hold their value well. From the Rubicon to the Willys to the Islander Editions, Jeep fanatics love the limited-production models. But I feel in this case, it’s still not enough to justify the asking price and even the opening bid is a bit optimistic. It may be solid underneath, but the outward appearance could scare potential bidders away. What do you think?

What’s up with the odometer? Did they come 6 digit equipped? Why is the first digit in a different font?

you would have to be high to buy this for this price or anything close to this—plus the location of SILT refers to the silt on the bottom of a river —-wow this is a wee bit rough—-this is a 2k buck project all day long and yes this type of odometer was on all jeeps outside of the usa for the period-
my viewing is that this is NOT worth the money but remember there is an ass for every seat out there.

Apparently, there’s a ton of confusion about the 6th digit ( 7 including tenth’s) Some say, 7 digits were from the factory, but replacement speedo heads had only 6. Many of the images show 7 ( with the 100K digit smaller) but many owners reported having 6. Either way, this “Scrambler”, has no likeness to the “SC” Rambler American of the other day, and Wiki claims, former President Reagan had a CJ-8 Scrambler on his ranch. http://image.fourwheeler.com/f/28481323+w660+h440+re0+cr1+ar0/154-1005-01%2Breagans-1983-cj8-scrambler-1962-jeep-cj6%2Breagan-with-his-scrambler.jpg

One of the car mags did a write up on Reagan’s jeep a few years back. It’s still out on his ranch.

I always thought these were cool……lbut the Forrest service bought a bunch of them…..sold them quick. They decided they were not stable. In fact they made there rangers quit driving them. I had a buddy that drove one of his own, asked him about it…….he thought it was very stable. The Forrest service custodians I knew said there had been some roll over accidents. They were only about 3 years old when they sold all of them. As I remember the title work came from the fed warning they were an unstable vehicle. I thought the long wheelbase would be great. The CJ’s were so small inside that these would be better and ride better as well.

Levi Edition Scrambler. My dad has what’s left of his 1978 CJ-7 Renegade Levi Edition sitting behind a shed. Funny thing is all the interior pieces and stuff are protected inside another shed
