While we receive plenty of submissions that look like they never left the showroom, there’s nothing wrong with a driver quality vehicle that’s already been broken in. A reader submitted this 1979 Pontiac Trans Am as a “beater,” and if you desire a fairly affordable classic muscle car that you won’t feel bad adding miles onto, it is available here on eBay.
Located in Ashland, Pennsylvania, this muscle car has a clean title, but unfortunately, the seller does not provide many details. However, this Trans Am supposedly runs and drives well.
I feel like the “beater” designation is a bit harsh. This example could certainly use some love, but it doesn’t seem beyond repair, especially for a 40-year-old muscle car residing in Pennsylvania. The seller mentions that there is no rust on the floors or trunk, but unfortunately, does not provide any undercarriage photos to back up this claim.
Under the hood, you’ll find a 403 cu.-in. V8 engine that the seller claims was rebuilt. The 6.6-liter V8 pairs to a TH350 automatic transmission with a shift kit, which delivers power to a rebuilt rear end with new axles. Additionally, the listing claims the vehicle has 155,000 miles on it, but it does not specify how many miles are on the rebuilt items.
At the time of this article being written, bidding is at $2,550 with the reserve not met. Do you think this Trans Am is worth picking up, or would you pass on this project Pontiac?
Seems like the 79 TA’ s have been coming out of the wood work!!
Nice car
At least this one didn’t come out of the woods…its a nice change from the normal and a decent looking ride
The slick roof is a bonus.
T-tops are not my favorite.
My brother bought a black/gold one of these new in ’79. He was the coolest guy in the neighborhood. I’d love to get one someday
Well its no Macho T/A and since it has the Oldsmobile engine, along with the automatic transmission, and I don’t care for the colors scheme. I would have to pass on this car. With Pontiac selling a ton of 79 T/A’s, I would rather wait until one comes available with options I have to have.
Had pretty much the same car back in the early/mid 80’s except it was black and gold. Loved that car but moved to Florida from New York and it didn’t have A/C so I traded it in on a newer (84) T/A with A/C. Big mistake. My wife still rips me about it. She loved that car too.
Ok so its not a silver 77 400 4 speed, its black and its really nice, this is no beater. If it was a beater it would keel over at 2500. I drove this exact same car. I want to say golden anniversary, it was new, may have been an 81, my freind let me use it for a week( good people). Was a great highway car , good in corners, went good, the 403 was not bad. Great cars….. ill show you a beater
Well, it’s cheap, and doesn’t need a back half, that motor is junk, is toss the 350 trani and install either a 400, or a 700r4, butler racing builds nice 455 Pontiac motors, no LS swap for me, make it a pure Pontiac, get rid of that 403, but no t tops is no sale for me
I’d l love to buy it. How do I contact the owner?
