Rust-Free 1972 Chevy Chevelle Malibu

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Chevrolet Malibus are a symbol of what being hip looked like in the ’70s. The cars appear in loads of movies including Drive and The Fast and The Furious. They’re aggressive yet have an aura of opulence. This example is said to have 56k miles. It is listed on craigslist in San Diego, California for $27,900. Thanks, T.J for the tip!

The exterior is finished in what can be assumed to be a Chevrolet factory green. The body is in excellent condition and is free of rust or significant damage. Some age-related blemishes may be present on the front end from stone chips. Overall this car is externally well-preserved which isn’t too much of a surprise for a car with only 56k miles.

The original interior is finished in a matching green throughout. The embossed fabric seats, carpet, door panels, and dash appear to be in excellent condition. It’s always very cool to see an entirely monochrome vehicle. It’s fairly rare to find newer vehicles with this sort of styling. The car is equipped with air conditioning, power steering, power disc brakes, and tilt steering.

A 350-cubic-inch V8 engine sends 165 horsepower to the wheels via an automatic transmission. The engine bay appears to need a detailing but the car is said to drive and settle into a smooth idle. It does not overheat, have leaks, or make any strange noises. This car is a great option for anyone who wants a classic in nearly perfect condition. The car seems to need basically no restoration or work. The right collector could add this to their collection without having to worry about potential issues after purchase. The price is a little more than some other examples you find, but it reflects the quality of the car. If you’re looking to purchase a clean classic, contact the seller on craigslist before it’s gone.

    Very clean classic.
Note to next owner: there are a boatload more of fake SS Chevelles than there are of good looking, original stock Chevelle Malibu’s. You’ll garner far more admiring looks from knowledgeable gearheads at practically any car show or Cars and Coffee than another pseudo Super Sport clone..

Totally agree Nevadahalf! While I appreciate going the clone route as a driver SS or whatever, for quite some time I’ve been equally drawn to the more pedestrian of examples. For me it harkens back to the reality of what I saw everywhere around me back then, and yes, I admit exercises my nostalgia node. While most of the high performance stuff of every make were not rare, they were far outnumbered by the more tame versions.

I’d only change the rims. They do nothing for me. I prefer the SS 5 spoke rims that these and Camaro’s had.

$ seems optimistic, especially since it appears that the A/C isn’t currently working.
But I’ve certainly been surprised by what brings higher prices before

Paint looks like it’s Oasis Green metallic, but without seeing the data plate it’s an educated guess

I wonder what happened to the front side marker lights. I realize this is picky but i don’t care for where they moved the “350” emblem. It’s a Malibu 350 on one side and a 350 Malibu on the other. Looks better to me in the original location.

      Amos,
The front marker lights are incorporated in the front turn signals. That is where they are on my 72 SS.
Both 350 Malibu emblems are in the correct place. Look closely at the CL ad.

The 350 emblem is not the correct font style for a 1972 Malibu. I wonder if this is a 307 Malibu. The 307 Malibus did not have a engine size designation emblem, maybe this seller is trying to fake it? Who knows? But at this price, I am not interested anyway.

wow billy, i totally missed that. i guess i was thinking this was a 1970. you’re right the 72 emblem placement and side marker lights in the turn signals are 100% correct.

No biggie man. I honestly think and feel that this car is not what the owner wants us to think it is
Take a look at the photo of the trunk, open and closed. I think that the car got a complete paint job after someone attempted to straighten out the rear end. The trunk lid should have a instruction sticker for jacking procedure.
To top it off the owner is in the ionosphere on his dollar amount.
This one has a strange feeling. I mean why no photo of the fender tag or the the dash VIN or the door sticker. Or the engine ID?

FYI…1963–1969: California used black license plates with yellow lettering. I Googled and answered my own question. “why no black plate”

My first car was a blue one with a black vinyl top. Of course, that’s where it rusted through in the corners. This one thankfully doesn’t have that feature. Loved mine. Drove it into the ground.

One of the best looking “every man’s” (no offense, ladies) car. They were everywhere. As a kid I thought it was a Malibu 350 much like an SS 396/SS 454. Maybe the best color combination of that year, although I favored dusk gray and black.

Did you know that if you get into this car and head south on interstate 5 out of Marysville Washington towards Everett and just floor it the speedometer will go well past the 120mph numbers on the dash and the needle will eventually disappear pointing to the right of the dash? Although when you do that at 18 years old the front of the car begins to float and it’s very easy to change lanes you get across that long stretch of highway pretty quick.

Ya know. The closer I get to looking this car over the more I wonder.
Such as; p.b. canister corrosion, thermostat housing rust, alternator bracket rust.
What has happened to this Malibu?
I thought that the advertiser said that it spent its whole life in California, right?
Auhh, I’m walking for that kind of jingle.
    Later boys.
Happy new Year. No DUI from any of ya’all!

What’s with the crease in the roof on the passenger side that starts at the upper corner of the windshield and runs for a few feet???

      19sixty5,
Good eye man. I missed that completely.
Maybe a low garage door or a storage something or, who the hell knows. More of my skepticism of the story of this old Chevelle.
Just don’t think that we are getting the whole Lowden.

The best part of the Malibu is the chrome strip atop the fender door and by the rear window that none of my SS cars ever had.

A very special car, even though it’s not the 70,the 70 with the Lt1 350 hp and auto trans, was my daily for years, comfortable, an Hei and timing chain replacement and it was mega dependable. I never once worried about a sensor or a computer going bad. And I will gladly give up hp and mpg for the quadrajet, instead of the fuel injection.

While this was and is a great daily. A lot of cars have men made since 1972. I think the 73 Monte Carlo was a tad more comfortable.

I also understand this has it all over a Dynacorn, someone has the rotted to the gills 70 super sport and needs original parts over Chinese for the best quality restoration, so it has value

The 70-72 Chevelles were not available with the LT1, it was an option on the Corvette and Camaro only. If you had one, it was installed at a later date.
