The fourth-generation Toyota pickup went through a minor redesign for the 1986 model year, which included a new grille, front bumper, and some interior changes. They’re pretty hot right now and the seller has this 1986 Toyota SR5 4×4 Xtracab short-bed 4×4 pickup listed here on eBay in Ashland, Oregon. The current bid price is $8,100, but the reserve isn’t met yet.
This is enough pickup for most casual pickup owners who don’t need a full-sized truck. It would be much better than my tiny 1980 Dodge (Mitsubishi) D-50 Sport which needs another six inches of legroom and is primitive as… well, it’s primitive. The Xtracab feature would be to die for, although this one doesn’t exactly look too comfy for having anyone ride back there.
The seller doesn’t mention the rear bumper at all, which is a little strange. Clearly, it’s missing, and you want a rear bumper, or most people would. This owner didn’t want one, though, come to think of it. A lot of vehicles look better with smaller or no bumpers, but this is a truck. Inside the short bed looks like it’s in pretty good condition and this truck has a whopping 223,623 miles on the odometer. They say that there’s no rust, it’s never been in an accident, and as far as they know, the paint and interior are original.
The seat fabric needs some help, or not, depending on if the next owner cares about such things. Clearly, the former owner didn’t so maybe it’s good enough. It’s a never-ending game to keep fixing and restoring things to keep old vehicles looking great, as you all know. The underside looks solid with the usual surface corrosion. This one has a manual transmission and the seller says that the clutch works great.
This is Toyota’s 22R, a single-overhead-cam 2.4-liter inline-four that had about 110 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The seller thinks that it was rebuilt at the 169,000 mark and it sure looks clean. Would a smaller pickup like this Toyota work for any of you or are you a full-size-or-nothing truck owner?
Nice write up Scotty. I’ve loved these trucks since Marty Mcfly.. “look at that 4×4!” I currently own a late model Tacoma and it’s fits my needs more so than the full size Tundra before it. I’d love to add an 86-early 90’s SR5 to the household but I fear actually driving it in the North East. I’m not the sort of person to preemptively oil the frame to prevent rust.
Thank you, sir. I’m right there with you about the Tacoma being a better size for me. If I owned a contracting business or something like that, I could see needing a full-size pickup, or having to pull a trailer or boat or something. But, anything around the size of this Toyota is perfect for my current needs. I don’t need one that high, though, so maybe even a (gasp) two-wheel-drive version would work. Do people even buy 2WD pickups anymore? Just imagine the shocked looks you’d get in 2022 if you bought a two-wheel-drive two-door pickup!
I have a 2023 Silverado 2wd single cab short bed on order sir..

Congrats, Zahn! I’m glad to hear that folks are still getting 2WD pickups, and a short bed, too!
I loved my full size Tundra but it became cumbersome to drive after awhile consider I didn’t need its bed capacity or pulling power thought the interior space was comfortable. The Tacoma reminded me of my beloved XJ Cherokee…everything I need and nothing I don’t. 2wd trucks are around, but it snows a lot here and if I’m going to own a truck it will be 4×4, yea I can drive 2wd in the snow, but why bother?
Rear bumpers were optional.
Thanks, ace10!
Another rust free Toyota Hilux. I remember when Toyota produced trucks like this.
The outside looks great for that many miles, the seller also has a Bronco with no reserve.
It’s at $9,000, the reserve has been met, and there’s only one day left on the auction!
I hope whoever buys the truck enjoys it. Toyota made awesome trucks back in the day. :)
