Rust-Free Project: 1976 AMC Pacer D/L

Whether you love them or whether you loathe them, the fact is that the AMC Pacer has found favor with a certain segment of the motoring community, and has experienced a positive swing in value in recent years. This particular Pacer looks to be a solid example, and would potentially make a great base for a restoration project. Bidding for the Pacer has been fairly healthy, and this has pushed on up to $4,050, but the reserve hasn’t been met. If you really must have the Pacer in your life regardless, you could always click the button for a BIN price of $13,500. Located in Muir, Michigan, you will find the Pacer listed for sale here on eBay.

Looking at the Pacer, the overall condition seems to be reasonably good. There are a few minor dings and marks on the car, but there don’t appear to be any major rust issues or problems. The Sunshine Yellow paint is a bit faded, but the car appears to be quite presentable as it is. There doesn’t appear to be any real problems with the exterior trim, while the owner has an extra set of hubcaps that will be included in the sale. So far then, the story of this Pacer is looking quite positive. I initially thought that there was a crack in the rear glass, but I’ve magnified all of the photos to get a good look, and it appears that there is something that is reflected in the rear glass in one photo.

The engine photos provided by the owner aren’t great, but what we can see looks to be quite clean. The engine is the 232ci 6-cylinder, backed by a 3-speed automatic transmission. The owner says that the car runs and drives well which is just another positive to add to the list for this car, while it is also fitted with power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning. From a performance perspective, the Pacer did suffer, as its relatively short overall length didn’t equate to a low vehicle weight, while the engines themselves were not packed with performance. How badly were they affected? When new, a 232ci automatic Pacer would cover the ¼ mile in around 20 seconds. That’s not particularly fast in anyone’s book. However, owning a Pacer today isn’t about outright performance, but about owning a car where the manufacturer had the courage to be daring and bold in styling and interior space packaging.

Once again, the owner presents us with some pretty ordinary photos of the interior of the Pacer, but by piecing together the photos, they show an interior that also appears to be in pretty nice condition. The cloth trim looks to be in good condition, as does the dash. I wish that I could tell you more about the condition of carpets, headliner and a few other items, but that’s it from the photos. As well as air conditioning, it does appear as though the Pacer is fitted with power windows.

I’m really not sure whether the Pacer is ever going to be a car that is worth massive amounts of money, but nice examples are certainly holding their own in the market at present. The past unpopularity of the Pacer is a factor that may work in the favor of owners into the future, as many a tired Pacer was sent off for scrap instead of being restored. This car is a solid example that looks like a good prospect for restoration. The BIN price might be high, but the car might also represent a solid long-term investment.

    Wait, what? $13.5k for a faded yellow Pacer in this condition? I would have expected that for one in a better shade with factory alloy wheels, bucket seats, console and the performance options. Even then it would be a stretch. Pedestrian, elderly person AMC product with too many strikes against it. And I like Pacers! Limited eBay write up says it comes with an antenna! Surreal.

    I would add, flat tires and more dings and dents than the one mentioned next to the license plate. Also, Colorado tags on a vehicle for sale in Michigan. Both areas not exactly immune to deep snow and ice on the roads. Tread carefully fellas! I would rather peel off $13k for a couple of the AMC Marlins listed near this one on evilBay.

      I can remember when you’d be hard pressed to unload a Pacer for a few hundred bucks.

    I remember at the time of introduction how “modern” they looked. So fresh, so space-age! Too bad they had to drop in a different, much heavier engine than they had originally planned. Zero to 60 in 20 seconds!

        AMC Guy, do you remember the dude who built a hot 258 inch/four-speed Gremlin in the early 1970s? (His dad used to own a local AMC dealership.)

        I saw it racing at Lion’s (somewhere I have a photo of it in action there, kicking backside on some Goats!) and it used to surprise a lot of folk.

      Steve, I used to joke that the Pacer offered four-cylinder performance with V8 fuel economy… ;-)

      It was a great concept that would have worked well with a FWD platform; with the originally planned engine dashed and having no cash, AMC – yet again – did the best it could with what it had.

    What’s the rock for? Maybe it goes with the car. That rock got to be worth $10g’s then. C’mon, can’t blame Farmer Brown from Michigan that buys a Pacer from some old family friend in Denver for a grand, brings it back, puts a wild price tag on it, it’s called “Flipping”. Tractors aren’t cheap, you know. Nice car, but news flash, nobody gonna spend 5 figures on a Pacer,,,would they?

      That’s hilarious!! They just didn’t want to do it. I used to work at a tint shop and I know we never quoted any vehicle that high! Then again, no one ever brought us a Pacer!

    when they were introduced, my wife and i went to the dealership to buy one. place was packed, finally sat down with a salesman who went thru his pitch. we knew sticker price, started to discuss discount off retail. he laughed at us. “price is sticker plus”. end of conversation and he did nothing to bring us back.

    I had a 75. Road nice, handled surprisingly good and was quiet. If AMC had more development money than GM budgeted on ashtrays it would have made a big difference. I had the bigger 258 but thought it was a 4 on my test drive! The gas station must have thought it was a 401 based on my near daily visits…
    Not really a bad car (loved the quirkiness) but many annoying repairs and design weaknesses.
