Rust-Free Roadster: 1966 Datsun 1600 Fairlady

The Datsun Fairlady, also known as the Sports in some markets, was a roadster produced in the sixties and pre-dates the company’s famed Z car of the seventies.  Over 40,000 of these rolled off the assembly line during the two-generation run, with the export-market 1966 Datsun 1600 being offered for sale here on eBay falling into the latter incarnation.  Production continued through the spring of 1970, so if you’ve been looking for a nice example that’s near mid-way through the span this one may be worth checking out.  It’s located in Northridge, California, with bidding currently standing at $18,200.  It’ll take more than that for the Datsun to exchange hands, as there has been a reserve set.

The car’s entire description can be viewed here.  The seller says this 1600 is a 100% rust-free California car and that the vehicle is in excellent driver-quality condition.  It’s said to have been stored inside a garage in CA for most if not all of its life, and has never been outside for long periods of time or exposed to any harsh weather conditions.  Nothing is specifically mentioned about the condition of the convertible top, but judging from the photos it certainly looks to be in decent shape.

From a cosmetic standpoint, the Datsun is said to look great with the older paint sustaining a nice shine and showing minimal wear and imperfections.  No word on exactly how many years have passed since it got a respray, and the seller mentions that the car has never had an entire restoration, so other than the finish it’s a bit of a mystery what else has received attention and what all is still original.

Things under the hood are very neat and tidy, with the engine said to start right up and run as smooth as a Rolex!  The clutch is also stated to be excellent, providing effortless shifting through every gear.  There’s plenty of get-up-and-go, and the entire drivetrain is said to be tight and solid.  No photos of the underside are provided, but we do get to see the trunk area and everything seems to be in good order inside there.

There’s not much to fault about the interior either, which the seller says is in great shape with all gauges presenting the correct readings.  The placement of the ignition key switch is interesting.  Books and a factory shop manual are also included with the sale, and I’m guessing the next owner is going to be pretty well pleased with their purchase.  What are your thoughts on this 1966 Datsun 1600 Fairlady Roadster?

Get one without rust and you have a great car. Good power and handling over the MGB it was competing with. This is one of the best examples I’ve seen surface.

This is a nice alternative to the English roadsters of the same period. Lots of collectors focus on the 2000 Fairlady and these have flown under the radar for a while. Not anymore. This one looks good in the pictures but a pre purchase inspection by one familiar with this model is needed. My brother had one of these that wasn’t this nice.
